Blackburn (Gisborne) are spending a few dav.s in 'Christchurch and are the guests of Mrs Murray Jackson, Leinster road. Mr and Mrs W. H. Clark and family 1 have returned from a short visit to Hanmer.
Mr and Mr s N. S. Brown returned yesterday from a ten days' visit to Wanganui. Visitors at "Haeremai," Sumner, include Mrs. Andrew (Cashmere Hills), Mrs James' Ensor, and Miss Morris (Ambeiiey). Mrs J. H. Hall is spending a few weeks at Hanmer.
Colonel and Mrs Killery, visitors from England, who have been staying at Warwick House, have left for a fishing expedition to Taupo. Mrs Raymond and Master Eric Raymond have arrived from Wellington and are the guests of Mrs C. F. d'Auveigne, Merivale. Canon and Mrs Percival James (Auckland) are staying at the United Service. Dr. and Mrs Beedie and Mrs McBeth (Dannevirke), who were in Christchurch during the Medical Conference, are visiting the West Coast. Mrs Alfred Biinz will be hostess at a musical "At Home'' given for members at the Canterbury Women's Club on Friday, at 8 p.m.
Mrs D. G. Matheson and Miss E. Edwards returned from Timaru yesterday, where they spent a week at the Hydro Grand Hotel.
Miss Higgins, who has been on a prolonged visit to rel lions in Sydney, has returned to Christchurch, and is at present staying with the Rev. P. H. and Mrs Pritchett, 14 Edinburgh street, Riecirton. The Rev. F. R. Charman and Mrs Charman, of Morven, are in Christchurch on a holiday. '
Mr and Mrs Ralph Guy Porter, who recently returned from a six months' tour of Australia, have been guests at the Hotel Federal during the last fortnight. They left for Auckland last night. \
Recent arrivals at the Royal Hotel are Mrs A. Killick (Wellington), Mr and Mrs J. Connolly (Rakaia), Mrs Walter Mnofarlane and Mi3s Macfarlane (Culverden). Ambassador Booth and his private secretary, Mr Israel, who are. arriving in Christchurclf to-morrow, will stay at "St. Elmo" as the private - guests of Mr and Mrs F, J. Murray during their stay in Christchurch.
Mrs Glanville (Salisbury street) and Mrs Cormack (Francis avenue) are on a visit to Mr W. Cormack, Lismore. They hope to leave shortly for England and the Continent.
■ Mrs Bauchop and her little son, who have been visiting Mrs H. J. Raphael, returned to Wellington last night. Mrs Raphael accompanied them to Wellington, where she will spend a few weeks. On Tuesday afternoon several of the 'adies from Quamby paid a surprise visit to Miss Maud Johnson, who is at present residing at her bungalow at North Beach, and presented her with a unique tea service as a small token of their appreciation of her kindness to them during the seven years she was at Quamby. Before returning to town the ladies were entertained at afternoon tea.
A delightful farewell party was given at Ballantyne's tea-rooms on Monday afternoon by the Domestic Science teachers, to Miss E. Aiken, who has been appointed to the staff of the A-shbnrton Technical School. Amongst those present were: Misses Aiken (2). Blackmore, McKee, Shaw, Gilmour, Wardle, and Ross.

In aid of the orphans of the Nazareth Home, a concert arranged by Mr Frank McDonald will be given in Greater Crystal Palace on Sunday night. Bykind permission of the J. C. Williamson proprietary, Miss Maud Fane and Mr Cvril Bitehards, of the WiHiamsun Musical Comedy Company, will contribute items, and several well-known local artists will also assist.

Stewart (Cheviot). Among those staying at Warner's Hotel are Mr and Mrs A. W. Gillers ( \ ufkland), Mr W. R, Bul!o n and fmiiily (Kaikoura), Mr and Mrs H. A. Drereton (Wellington), and Mr and Mrs K. C. Davis (Providence, U.S.A.).
At the Welsh concert to be held at the Choral Hall to-morrow night, the lady performers will wear the historic scarlet* coats of Wales. * These recall an incident in Welsh history, when the French flotilla appeared at Fishguard long years ago. The women of Wales, in their scarlet coats, massed on the hilltops, and were mistaken by the Frenchmen for British troops. In this wav the situation was saved.
Mrs Helen A. Earland, late proprietress of "Lakeside" Boarding House, | Queenstown, died on Monday morning. Deceased, who was 75 years of age,., was a native of Petworth, Sussex, England. She was married in England, and came to New Zealand with her husband and family iu 1887, landing in Dunedin; here she resided until eight years ago, when she removed to Queenstown. The deceased lady leaves three sons, Messrs Harry, Sydney, and Percy Earland, all of Dunedin, and one daughter. Miss Earland, of Queenstown. Her husband died 38 years ago.
A pleasant kitchen evening was given by Mrs W. A. Tribe, of H .relord street, to Miss Una Coster, on Monday night. A large number of useful gifts were given by the guests. Those present included Mesdames Tribe, W. Coster, H. Pickering, H. G. Sheppard, H. A. Gil'je: t, C. M. Sbepi.ard, Courtn y, and VV. O. Cowan, Misses Una Coster, Rata Tribe, Phyllis McCredie, Rita Vincent, Muriel Hartle, and Messrs H. Tribe, W. .tlaily, B. Ritchie. W. O. Cowan, R. A. Turner, C. M. Sheppard. F. Sheppard, 11. A. Gilbert, L. Mably, D. Mcßne, and E. Reid. The time was enjoyably spent with musical items, games, and dancing. A ladies' tennis tournament, married versus single, was played at the United Tennis Club's courts, the teams proving to be remarkably evenly matched. The married ladies were represented by Mrs Wake, Mrs Fleetwood, Mrs Pike, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Warren Fisher, Mrs Warsaw, Mrs Sullivan (Annette Kellerman), Mrs van AscTi, Mrs Nathan Smyth*, and Mrs L. V. Comerford. The single lady players were: Miss D. Diamond. M. Spiers, I. Ponder, M. and L. Saunders. Whitta, M. Dorman, Greta Wnelit. Mejya Wake, nnd Amy Campbell. After some exciting sets, {lie married ladies proved victors by 116 games to 109. Immediately the result was made known, the single ladies issued a challenge to their opponents, so another srnod match may be expected shortly. Afternoon tea was dispensed in the pavilion by Mrs J. C. Lord. A. particularly delightful party was given at the Beresford yesterday afternoon by Mrs Keith Garrick, as a farewell to the Misses Walker. The floral decorations were most artistic, and on each guest's plate was a bunch of rata, which made a most effective colour note. A feature of the catering was the beautiful "send-off" cake on one side of which was the word "Scotland," and on the other "New Zealand." A model of the "Niagara," by which the Misses Walker are leaving New- Zealand, decorated the top of the cake, on which were tiny bunches of Scotch thistle, white heather, and rata. The whole was a veritable triumph of the confectioners' art. The hostess wore a charming frock of navy marocain, with scarlet embroidery and scarlet/ georgette sleeves. Her becoming little navy hat was trimmed with scarlet berries. Miss Walker wore a blue coat-frock and small blue Jiat to match, and Miss Margaret Walker wore a fawn gabardine coat-frock and nigger-bro\yn hat. Amongst the guests were: —Mrs Diamond, Mrs R. J. Seddon, Mrs H. T. J. Thacker, Mrs W. S. Bean, Mrs M. S. Brown, Mr 3 George Clarkson, Mrs W. Thacker, Mrs H. D. Mac Donald, Mrs J. W. C. Nixon, Mrs M. L. Beading, Mrs J. S. Hawkes, Miss Emily Murray, Mrs W. Le Cren, Mrs E. E. Webb, Mrs Whitcombe, Miss Eva Burgin, Mrs Buchanan, and Mrs Minty.
