FARMERS' UNION.
MID-CANTERBURY EXECUTIVE. The monthly meeting of the MidCanterbury executive of the Farmers' Union was held yesterday, Mr G. W. Leadley presiding. The chairman expressed regret that the attendance was so small. It was mifortunate that the field day at the Experimental Fann clashed with the meeting. Mr J. Pow wrote that he had taken over the duties of Dominion secretary, vice Mr Jack, and hoped the business relations in connexion with the Union would be agreeable and harmonious. The outgoing secretary, Mr Jack, wrote appreciating the loyal 00-opera-tion from provincial secretaries. Hi© was retaining the secretaryship of the New Zealand Council of Agriculture and the Dominion Farmers' institute, and though leaving the Union he would not forget those with whom he had had such pleasant associations. He would be pleased at any time to be of assistance to the Union. The letter was received, and th© secretary was instructed to suitably acknowledge it. The Dominion secretary wrote asking for information which would enable him 1 to compute the exact membership of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. . The chairman explained that at present iflo organising could be done in a grain-growing district like Ashburton. It was decided to notify Mr Pow that the annual return would be sent in due course. The chairman, in referring to the Ashburton County award in regard to threshing-mill employees, said it appeared to him that the Court had misconstrued the whole position, and that if any concessions were made it would be for the mill-owners to say whether the farmers and grain-growers would pet any benefit. He had written to Mr AV. W. MuJholland to the effect that a conforenee- would; t>e held at. AsL burton on January 12th to discuss the question or wheat prices for the coming season. Air Bruce said the Meat Pool Board was quoting Canterbury lamb at 94d per lb, whereas it was worth lOd on the open market; also that North Island lamb was quoted at lOd against Canterbury's 9d. It was decided to write to the Meat Pool Board and ask it to explain the discrepancy. The meeting then went into committee to discuss the qucr-tion 01 wheat prices.
