WINTER GALES IN BRITAIN.

The wild weather in Britain continues, with blinding snowstorms and floods in many districts. Much wreckage has been driven ashore in the Firth of Forth. Thousands of fishermen have been rendered idle. A gale with, a velocity of sixty miles an hour is raging on the south coast of England, and vessels are battling with huge seas. While docking at Southampton the White Star liner Majestic, 56,651 tons register was swept by a fierce squall and collided with the Cunard liner Berengaria, 62,200 tons. Fortunately neither ship was seriously damaged. The toll of small shipping is serious. The lifeboats have been continually out. A number of thrilling escapes from wrecking by coastal boats and trawlers is reported. Rough Christmas weather is expected.
