ITALIAN IMMIGRANTS IN AUSTRALIA.

1 STATEMENT BY LONDON"' EMBASSY. (By C*bl«—Pre«« A«oclalloit—Copyright.) (Atutiiliin ind N.Z. Cible Auooittion.} (Received December 22nd, 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 21. The Australian Press Association' learns from the Italian Embassy that a great majority, of the Italian emigrants to Australia have. been nominated by Italians already settled in the Commonwealth, and chiefly working on the sugar plantations in Queensland and northern New South Wales. The emigrants travel direct from Italy by Italian steamers, and their, migration is supervised by the Italian Emigration Commission, which ensures that they are found work or possess adequate means of sustenance pending employment. The Embassy discredits the reports that hundreds of Italians are without work in Queensland, and states it has received no complaints of unemployment or other hardship among the emigrants who do not settle in the towns, but are essentially rural workers, and therefore the type of settler that Australia seeks. The Emigration Department at Australia House disclaims responsibility for the Italian emigration to Australia. [A message trom Brisbane earlier in the week said: A deputation of stranded Italians wai.tid on the Home Secretary (the Hon. W. McCormack) and explained that, &s they were unable to speak English, they misunderstood the conditions of immigration published in Italy, and requested the Government to warn intending Italian settlers of the position. Mr McCormack promised to seek the assistance of the Commonwealth with the object of preventing any recurrence.]
