ALLEGED ISSUE OF FALSE CHEQUES. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEQJLUf.) . MAS'TEIITON, December 22. Leonard Walter Makin, who was arrested f°r forgery, has been remanded to appear at Wellington on December 29th. Accused onened -an account at Palmerston North for £24 with instructions that it would be operated on at Carterton. He visited Carterton this niortiingj drew a cheque for £2O, which was honoured, and then presented a cheque for £O6O drawn on the Discharged Soldier's Settlement Loan account, but he was refused, aa the manager had been warned. 'Makin asked for an advance of £2OO to buy a car, but waa refused, so he left. The bank manager followed him to the railway station and both boarded the express. On arrival at Masterton the manager pointed Makin out to a constable, who arrested him. It is believed that accused issued five cheques totalling £3OOO.
