——; —t REPORT ON" THE FIRE. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) WELLINGTON, December '22. The Minister of Mines has reosivel a report in reference to the fire >t the Tanpiri Extended Mine from the Chief Inspector of Minee, Mr J. A. C. Bay:*. The Minister says he is quite =.iii>fi*ci that everything possible has been done to make the mine safe. He was satisfied, too, that there was no need f;>r a public enquiry. The Department had been watching th© situation carefully for some months past, and with the Department the safety of the minei> came first. The company had carried out the Department's requirements <>nJ the portion of the mine now open had as 6a^e as was scieutificaiiy possible. "As far as science tan make a mine safe it is safe," added Mr Anderson.
