THE TAHU CUP. PAKEOBA A WINNERS. fl?he final mutches for the Tahu Cup took place yesterday on the Christchurch Polo Club's ground at Hagley Park. The -weather was again fine, but. a-nor'-east "breeze, which increased in strength in the afternoon, proved unpleasant. Five games were played during the day—two in the morning and three in the afternoon, and in every instance the result was interesting, the handicapping of Dr. W. Fax and Mr J. McDonald being the subject of high praise from players and spectators alike. The winners proved to be the Pareora A team, with four wins, ■ Christchurch A being runners up with three games. Amuri finished with two games to their credit, and Pareora B one game. Details of the matches are as follows: Pareora A. v. Einsiora. Pareora A (A. S. Elworthy, P. Elworthy, 11. Elworthy, and C. L. Orbell) scr v. Rangiora (It. Bennetts, J. D. McCracken, D. Chapman, and J. Matson) 7 goals. Play in the first cliukka was bright and fast, Pareora doing most of the attack. They scored four goals, A. Ehvorthy getting two, and P. Elworthy and C. L. Orbell one each, D. Chapman made, a good drive, and placed the ball -behind the posts, Rangiora thus scoring their first goal. Pareora were allowed three free hits, from two of which they scored. From hot play in front of the posts, P. Elworthy scored another goal, which was followed by two others:—one by H. Elworthy, and the other by C. L. Orbell. The game ended: Pareora A 9, Kangiora 8. Pareora B v. Amuri. Pareora B (G. Grigg, W. H. Orbell, J. C. Miller, and H. J. C. Harper) 6 goals v. Amuri (D. W. J. Gould, R: Gould, L. R. Macfa, rlane, a?d J. C. Macfarlane) 4 goals. Soon after ploy commenced, D. Gould scored for Amuri, L. Macfarlane being noticeable a few minutes later for a clever backhand shot, which prevented Pareora from registering. The next score to Amuri was made by D. Gould from an opening made by his brother Roger. Towards the close of the game the same player managed to place another goal. The final score was: Amuri 8, Pareora 6. ' Christchurch A■ v. Pareora A. Christchurch A (Captain Tahu Rhodes, Major Hutton, B. B. Wood, and R. M. D. Johnson) 3 goals v. Pareora A (A. S, Elworthy, P. Elworthy, H. EJwortliy, and C. L. Orbell) scratch.. This was the best game to date, and the spectators were thrilled with the play, which was fast and open. After a few minutes of fast play, C. L. Orbell made a good run, from which H. Elworthy placed a goal. B. B. Wood distinguished himself with a clever back-hander, and then Johnson scored for Christchurch from a melee. P. Elworthy scored a little later. Interesting play followed. Orbell missed scoring from a likely chance, but P. Elworthy coming up fast landed a good goal. Christchurch attacked hotly in the socond chukka, Major Hutton saving well. Wood, who was watching his vis a vis, A. Elworthy, well, got away ;with a good run, but the ball came back. Orbell got away with a good run, and placed another goal for his side. Christchurch promptly retaliated, Wood following up a good back-hander and scoring.. Oaptain Rhodes was next conspicuous in a hot rush up to the jjoal-mouth, the ball then unfortunately going astray. Johnson placed a goal almost immediately afterwards. The bell rang for time, but as the ball was still in play the game was continued, at the result of which Elworthy scored. Orbell got away, and-missed a likely score which, however, wbb turned to account by P. Elworthy. Orbell came away again, and taking his time, placed another goal without difficulty. From another hot attack* H. Elworthy scored. Pareora 8, Christchurch 6. Amuri v. Hangiora. Fast, open play characterised the first chukka. each side attacking strongly in turn, Amuri. having slightly the better of things. Just on the call of time for the first chukka, Rangiora hit behind to prevent their opponents from scoring. The chukka ended without either side scoring. Amuri made. the pace hot in the second chukka, attacking most of the time. Rangiora again had recourse to hit behind.' Amuri then commenced to play with better effect, and had their opponents in a bad way. Roger Gould was the first to score from an irresistible rush. D. Gould, who was playing useful polo, capped his efforts by scoring two consecutive goals. The third chukka produced some pretty play, Amuri continuing- their aggressive tactics. L, Macfarlane scored a ■ good goal, which had the effect of stimulating Rangiora to greater efforts. Bennetts made a great run from beyond half-way, and keeping the ball to himself, scored a beautiful goal. Another goal was scored by Roger Gould for Amuri, wh.o thus won by 9 to'B. 'Pareora B-v. Christchurch A. Grigj* soon scored for Pareora from a free hit, Major Hutton equalising matters by a good goal a few moments later. Johnson placed another goal for Christchurch just before the end of the chukka. On resuming Pareora brightened up their play, and Miller landed a nice goal. Johnson got away for Christchurch, Major Hilton completing the movement by scoring another goal. Another goal was gained byi Johnson after a period of exciting play. . Play continued bright in the last chukka, Wood equalising the scores with u beautiful shot. Captain Rhodes followed suit, giving his side the victory by one point, the game resulting: Christchurch A 9 goals, Pareora B 8. Subsequently the winners were presented with the Tahu Cup by Mrs Hutton, each member of the team receiving a miniature silver cup. A. S. Elworthy, In returning thanks on behalf of his team, expressed pleasure at the victory, it being the first time that the name of Pareora A would be placed on the cup. He also paid a tribute to the handicappers for their successful efforts.
Cheers were then given for Captain Rhodes and Mrs Hutton.
