Imagination and resource devoted to the smuggling of opium into? Australia are hot always successful, states the "Melbourne Age." The difficulties of detecting opium vary, but ini process .of time the Customs officers become acquainted with a wide range of expedients. Traps sometimes catch would-be smugglers, besides resident Asiatics unlawfully in possession of the potent stuff. During the July-September quartern the value of the opium seized by Customs authorities would have maintained a family in moderate comfort for about a year. The whole quantity was 401b 12oz. TEe bulk of it was seized in Queensland and Western Australia. Penalties amounting to £lO3 were imposed upon the owners, and, according to an official return 'issued recently by the Customs the number of seizures was thirty. The opium was worth £589, Curiously enough during the previous quarter penalties amounting to £l2O were imposed' in respect of £lB7 worth of opium.
