The Auckland ' 'Star'' has the following : —lt is sa,id that death by gaspoisoning is a pleasant one. Judging by the numDer oi suicides by this means, it is popular, anyhow. The same has been said of drowning, but none of the drowned ever come to life to relate the delight of under-water asphyxiation; nor. do those who are found dead with the kitchen gas-ring tube to their lips. Anyhow, ■ passengers by trains which leave Auckland about the time that descends on the land, are not in favour of gas-poisoning—they are partially poisoned every night. They enter the train and take their seats, in a close, stuffy carriage, with closed windows. Herculean efforts raise some of these, windows to the half-way limit; tiie remainder are immovable, stuck fast with the glue and grime of ages. Then comes a porter who goes gaily through, lowering the glass bowls of the lamps and turning on the gas cocks. These cocks pour out gas for five or ten minutes, during which those fortunate enough to be sitting at apertures put their heads out and gasp for air, and desperate attempts are strain in^+o of en those windows which will aot open. But renef comes just in i... Another porter strolls through, lighting matches, firing the jets (one of these days he may come a bit too late and blow a gas-nlled carriage to glory), and slamming the glass arcs closed. Then the train ihoves off, and the "gassed" passengers are resuscitated By a welcome rush of air, and rea.ch their suburban homes with nothing worse than, a headache and a nasty taste in' the mouth. No,- gas-poisoning is not popular with suburßan train passengers !
