GENERAL NEWS.

The auction announcements of Craddock's Agency Coy., Ltd., H. Matson and Co., National Mortgage and Agency, Co., Ltd., W. E. Simes and Co., Harris Bros., P. S. Nicholls and Co., and H. B. Sorensen will be found on page 21 of this issue. At a meeting of the Timaru A. and P. Association yesterday (telegraphs our . correspondent) it was announced that the profit on the Association's recent show was £2BO, as compared! witih £2OO last year. A party of students from the Christchurch Training College leave Christchurch to-day for a cycling tour to the West Coast. The party consists of Messrs O. V. Berry, F. R. Wilson, L. Ensor, H. W. Black, 0. E. Beeby, and W. B. Harris. It was stated by Mr R. B. Owen at yesterday afternoon's meeting to arrange for the observance of Anniversary Day, that while operations in connexion with the improvement of the river banks were in hand, the workmen oame upon an old pole near the City Council Chambers, and as it was in a dilapidated condition it was decided, after some enquiries nad been made about it, to remove it. Happily Mr George Harper was passing before the work was put in hand and he informed Mr Owen that the pole was one of the first telegraph poles erected in the Dominion. It has now been decided to paint the pole and to place on it a plate with an inscription setting forth its history. Following on a fatal accident at Auckland through the collapse of scaffolding, Parliament last session passed a Scaffolding and Excavation Act. A number of stringent regulations have been gazetted for the future control of operations involving the use, of scaffolding. The Scaffolding Inspection Act of 190"8 is repealed, and among other things it is necessary in any case where there is a risk of fall of 12 feet or more in any building work, crane erection or excavation, to first notify the inspector; no scaffolding exceeding 25 feet in height may be erected or altered except under the supervision of a person certified by an inspector to be competent to exercise supervision; swinging gates may not be used unless authorised by the inspector; and the inspector may give directions in certain cases to ensure safety.. The farthest south and farthest north of the Dominion would appear to possess very healthy climates if the returns furnished by the various hospital districts relating to the prevalence of notifiable diseases can be taken as furnishing any criterion, for hy these, Southland ,and North Auckland are more favourably placed (says tho "Otago Daily Times"). By reasoning on the same lines it would appear that the health of the Dominion is improving. The latest weekly returns, which were shown to a "Southland Times" reporter by Mr T. Pryde, secretary of the Southland Hospital Board, show that 86 cases of notifiable diseases were j given, as compared with 228 for the | same period of the preceding year, and I 147 for the year before that. During the last 12 months thore were only 168 cases notified for the whole of the Southland Hospital District, which extends as far north as the Lakes.

The widening of the membership of the Canterbury Old Colonists' Association was informally discussed by some of those who attended yesterday afternoon's meeting to make arrangements for the observance of Anniversary Day. The matter was referred to during the course of the meeting by Mr L. B. Hart, who cited the case of the Auckland Old Colonists' Club, which admits to membership not only old colonists but their descendants. In the informal talk after the meeting, the suggestions were made that instead of limiting old colonists to those who arrived in Canterbury prior to 1860, the period should be extended to about 1870, before the immigration policy came into effect; that the descendants of old colonists should be eligible for membership; and that in the case of those who dosired to perpetuate the memory of the old colonists, but who are not old colonists or the descendants of the colonists, they should be eligible for associate membership. It was emphasised that unless the descendants of old colonists were made eligible for the Association would cease to exist in time owing to the deaths of the old colonists.

Alterations in the train time-table to operate from December loth are advertised iu this issue. A double-sided chute given to the Domains Board for the children's playground by the River Improvement Committee has been erected in the Gardens near tho paddling pond. Some timo age there were many complaints concerning the manner in which the Christchurch electoral rolls had been purged prior to the election. Mr T. W. Reese, Chief Returning Officer, stated la6t evening that after all the complaints only 46 applications to vote by declaration were made, and of the votes thus polled only 18 were sustained upon investigation. "If the Arbitration Court were abandoned you would be fighting each other like Kilkenny cats," replied Sir John Luke, when he was interrupted while dealing with the wages cut in the course of a political speech in Wellington. "What system would you institute in place of the Court? I say that the stabilisation of wages has been one of the best things brought about in New Zealand. As long as the Court has the determining of wages and conditions yon will get a fair deal from your employers." I The River Banks Improvement Committee is now directing its attention to the beautifying of the vicinity of tho old Provincial Council Chambers. I On the Gloucester street front the paling fence is being removed, and will j be replaced with a kerbing of rocks j just in front of a live fence; a new gate of iron, with stone pillars will replace the prosent gate. The grass plots on the Durham and Armagh streets fronts are to be attended to, and it is proposed to plant ice plants and generally to improve the appearance of these plots. Hundreds of seaside cottages on the Manawatu Coast, from Rangitikei Heads to Plimmerton, are already fully occupied for the holiday season (states the "Manawatu Daily Times"). In every place the drift by blocking the outlet of springs and small streams, has formed a swamp area near the sand-hills on the sea line. These are infested with mosquitoes to such an extent that the pleasure of the seaside is seriously interfered with. Every known remedy, from boiling small pots of tar inside to spraying with oil of citron, has been tried. There is only one way, and that is eradication by spraying the breeding places with kerosene. They are undoubtedly the largest buyers of men's and boys' attire in the Dominion, and probably in Australasia.
