The disqualification of Mr J. D. Cohn's Dauphin for the Prix du Oonseil Municipal (one of the priiwipil races' m France) caused groat excitement at Longchamp. IhiupUn va? i ;qu ckest away, and, at a smart p:ice, Jed his field' from flag to p.ist. L» Prodigo made a game effort to catch the leader, but the hitter v.'on hands down. As Dauphin started at a good price the dismay in the backers' camp was great, but, suddenly (says the Paria "New York Herald" of October 16th) the "sirene" was heard, the signal that there was an objection to the winner. Tho suspense was not long, for the I numbers wer«f soon changed, and that of La Prodige replaced that of Dauphin, who had been die-qualified, his jockey being unable to pull the full weight. The narrow margin of 125 grammes, or a quarter of a pound, was wanting, and this cost M. Cohn the sum of 238,450 francs (about £10,000) in stakes and possibly no mean sum in bets. The luckv winner is M. Thibault Calm, whose four-year-old was ridden by Bellhouse. How the accident happened remains ta be told, for several versions were current after the race, the plausible one Leintr that at the last minute Sharp©'s sadd'e was. changed, and that sufficient care was not taken to verify the weight. A further message states that Mr J. IX Cr>hn has decided to race his horses in England in the future. A backer of Dauphin, the disqualified) winner of the Prix du Conseil Municipal, states the "Sportsman," has summoned the owner, Mr Cohn—as being responsible for his jockey, who should have drawn the weight—to appear before the Judge de Paix of the Bth Arrondissement. He claims'the money loat on Dauphin, namely, 5 francs, to win, arid a similar amount for a place,' and has placed the matter in the hands of his lawyer. This reads like rubbing it in with a vengeance. North Islanders who saw The Speaker's, good fourth in the Ashhurst Cup are not likely to overlook him in his engagement at Wopdville to-day. The Jockey Club in England has brought forward its scheme for the insurance of jockeys, the need of which has. been emphasised by reeent fatal accidents necessitating an appeal to charity for the dependants. To the fund, which is to bo called the jockey's accident benevolent scheme, each owner has to subscribe Is for each time he starts a horse in a race, while Is is to be deducted from each riding fee of jockeys and apprentices. Messrs Weatherby and Sons, who handle the business affairs of the Jockey Club, are to administer the fund in accordance with the directions of the stewards of the Jockey Club. The fund covers only accidents which occur during races, the jockey being covered from the time he weighs out to when he weighs in again. The maximum payment in case of death is to be a lump sum of £2OOO, or a weekly payment of £2 to the widow or other dependant, and I.os for each child until tne child reaches the ago of 16 years. In the case of permanent injury a jockey is to receive a lump sum, the maximum being £2OOO. In the' 1 case of temporary injury the weekly payment, with a limit of 52 weeks, is £l2 to a jockey and £0 to an apprentice jockey. The stewards emphasised that the fund is purely a benevolent fund, and no person has any legal claim, the administration being nt the discretion of the stewards of the Jockey Club. The Breeders' Futurity Stakes (about six furlongs), worth 15,000 dollars, was decided at Lexington, Kentucky, on September 27th, and attracted eleven two-year-olds. T«e contest ended in an unpleasant 'incident, for after Mr •E E. Bradley's Betty Beall (W. Taylor) had won by a neck from Mr J. S Ward's Donges (E. Eator), the firstnamed was disqualified and the race awarded to Donges. It appears that when the two horses, were ruuning close together about twenty yards from tho winning post, W, Taylor, the, rider of Betty Beall, deliberate y took hold of the bridle, of Donges in tull view of the visitors. The. stewards took action, and in addition to daW'Tavlor (a brother of the rider of Betty Beall , the trainer of the filly, by , w«i, to the United States in 1917.
