TRAMWAY SHELTER.
FURTHER ADVERTISEMENTS PROHIBITED.
Tlie use of the tramway shelter in Cathedral square for advertising purposes was the subject of a report to the Christehurch Tramways Board at its meeting yesterday by the Works and Traffic Committee. The Board de'cide'd'that in the future no more such advertisements should be allowed. The report was as follows :-rWhen war patriotic efforts were in progress, advertising was permitted on the Tramway Board's shelter in Cathedral square. When the war was over, the Board wrote to the City Council that it proposed to prohibit all future advertisements or. the shelter, and asked for the Council's co-operation. This was promised. This year the Council granted permission to the Industrial Association to advertise its Exhibition, subject to the Tramway Board's consent. The Industrial Association wrote that it proposed to erect "an ornamental electric sign, to be properly designed, and made, by the city electrical department.'" The Board consented to the erection of such a sign, but the sign which was put up fl ; d not meet the expectations created by the Association's letter.
A few days before "Scout Day," some Scout official telephoned that the City Council and Industrial Association had each given them permission to place a Scout advertisement on the shelter, and the Board was being so informed as a matter of courtesy. The Scout officer was informed that the shelter wasHhe Tramway Board's property, and that consent could not be given without reference to the Board. The Scouts proceeded with their adT vertisement notwithstanding, but were, stopped by the general manager. The general manager then ascertained that the Mayor had given permission, and as 'the Scout's effort was then in full swing, the completion of the advertisement was permitted. It was stated that the Scouts wished the contrivance to stay up for several days. They were requested twice to remove it, but each time made the explanation. that carpenters were not available. Several days elapsed, and as apparently the Scout authorities were ignoring the wishes of the Board in the matter, the Board's staff were told to remove the disfigurement.
The committee has decided not to permit advertisements on the shelter under any circumstances in the future.
The report was adopted without comment.
