SOUTH CANTERBURY.

TEMUKA. A meeting of the Council of tho South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was held at Tcmuka on Saturday. Present—Messrs \V. Mcßridc (chairman), W. G. Aspinall (lion, treasuror), E. Ilardcasfcle, A. E. Benn, and W. Grant. A letter was received from the Department of Internal Affairs, stating that, pending a decision as to action to be taken in regard to deer herds, owing to tho destruction caused by them, a license to kill destructive deer on properties would be granted upon application by owners of properties. In regard to godwits .which, Mr Aspinall stated, camo from Siberia and were in New Zealand for a period of about two months only, the Department of Internal Affairs wrote that it had been decided to issue special regulations for an open season for godwit next year, and for the issuo of a license to kill these birds at a fee of ten shillings. The Marine Department advised, in reply to a request from the Society, that it could not agree to extend to 31st May the season for taking quinnat salmon in the Eangitata river. The council unanimously expressed the opinion that the Department ought to grant tho extension for the reason that the real run of these fish did not start before the month of May; it was resolved to forward to the Minister of Marine a strong requisition from as many fishermen as were willing to sign, urging the extension of the season for taking quinnat salmon. The' ranger reported that there was still a shortage of fish in the Eangitata, that there was a better quality of fish in the Opihi, that the Temuka, Waihi, and Ohapi rivers had yielded some good baskets of small fish, and that the Orari and Pareora fishings had been poor, owing to tho looseness of their waters and closed mouths. It was reported also that chamois and thar were increasing in the Mount Cook region. The secretary reported that a man who had taken out a license io kill opossums at Orari Gorge had got 154; for these the Society would receive a shilling per skin. The council resolved to accept with regret the resignation of Mr R. L. Wigley, and fl ask Mr C. Hassell to fill the vacancy; also to ask Mr E. Macdonald, of Fairlie, to fill the vacancy caused by the d,eath of the late Mr F. R. Gillingham. Cricket at the Tcmuka Oval on Saturday caused some sensations. Zingari in their first innings had made 130, to which Temuka had replied with 100. Zingari in their second innings could total 86 only, lierdman not out 1 36, Muff capturing 7 wickets for 46, and Craven 2 for 15. Requiring 117 in order to win, Temuka began their jtecoiid innings well, making 40 for the first wicket. After that there was a procession of batsmen, and tho innings closed for 42, K. H.
