No fewer than one hundred and sixteen brass bands took part in the contest aC the Crystal Palace recently, at which there were tliree movement® 'n the test piece, Hubert Bath's brass band symphony, "Freedom." This is one of the most difficult pieces which could be set for such a purpose. Old champion bands were out of the running, for tho championship was. won by a newcomer, Horwich Institute. There was an attendance of 30,00U, aiid 116 bands took part in the contests. The grand shield was won by tue Watford silver band. There w.ere 1398 entries for the Blaokpool Festival this year, a record. It was a six days event, thirty teams competing in tho folk aancea, while 80 choirs and orchestras also took part. A good deal of interest is taken in these contests in New Zealand, aa there are scleral similar competitions in the Dominion. The North Island -Bands Association contest takes plaoo at New Plymouth in February next, and tho South. Island contest takes place at Dunedin in the same month.
