LEWISHAM GENERAL HOSPITAL
FUNDS TOTAL NEARLY £6OOO. In a marquee in tho grounds of Lewisham Private Hospital yesterday afternoon, a large and representative gathering met to consider the report and balance-sheet of the Lewisiiam General Hospital Committee, which was formed a year ago, for the purpose of raising funds for tho building of a hospital, in which the nursing sisters of Lewisham will undertake to nurse, free of charge, tho sick poor of all denominations. On the motion of Mr Walter Clifford the Mayor was elected chairman.
After expressing pleasure at Icing asked to preside o\er such a iurgo gathering, Dr. 'l'hacker called on tno general secretary, Air Thomas Caiiill, to read the report and balance-sheeet, which were adopted, 011 the motion of Mr Clifford, who, as chairman of the committee, expressed his personal indebtedness to the members of the committee and stall-holders, who had worked loyally and harmoniously. Mr P. P. J. Amodeo, a member of the Lewisham General Hospital Committee, . asked to be allowed to publicly express the committee's appreciation of the assistance given by the Owners' and Breeders' Association and the Commercial Travellers, by whose splendid efforts the fund had benefited by over £BOO. On the motion of the chairman, a hearty vote of thanks to the Owners' nnd Breeders' Association and the Commercial Travellers' Association was carried by acclamation.
Mr J. W. Trist (Owners' and Breeders' Association) and Mr W. C. Flewellyn and Mr W, Herriek (Commercial Travellers' Association) acknowle3ged the vote, each speaker mentioning his pleasure nt being able to assist in such a philanthropic work as that of the Lewisham Sisters.
His Lordship, Bishop Brodie, who was received with prolonged applause, said that he felt somewhat of an intruder, as he had been absent in Europe during most of the time of the committee's work, but, nevertheless, it was fitting that a Bishop should be interested in the work of hospitals, as those who had studied the history of those institutions knew that the care of the sick and the poor, the work of present-cjay hospitals, was, in earlier ages, undertaken at the houses of Bishops, who dispensed alms and hospitality. He was particularly pleased to hear of the co-operation of different Associations in furthering the good work' of the Lewisham General Hospital Committee. Hospital work was essentially a work for co-operation, not for competition. He was delighted to learn that his Anglican friends intended building a bospitnl, for he realised that there was work for all. Each section should welcome the efforts of others to alleviate human suffering, and he wished his Anglican brethren the greatest sufceess in the work they had undertaken, Continuing, his Lordship paid a high tribute to the great skill and devotion of the doctors and nurses at the Public Hospital, and said that ho was making a study of certain questions relative to hospital administration, and hoped later to interest the general public, and more especially the legislators, in his views on the matter, particularly in regard to mental caws. On behalf of the Reverend Mother and Sisters of Lewisham, he thanked all who had in any way assisted in realising the substantial sum that now stood to the credit of the fund, especially to the Owners' and Breeders' Association and to the Commercial Trnvllers. Though not wishing to particularise, bo folt that he must mention the o-r°at work of the cenernl secretary, Mr T. Cahill. Mr Clifford mentionr-d that he bad t.hot morning received a cheque for £]<~>o for th-e fund. .All present were entertained by the gicfors at nftf-nnnri -fy>n.
