There has been persistent and most widely-displayed news in American newspapers for the past fortnight in regard to the Kuklux ,'Klan, i,nd it promises to hold publio attention. Mr John F. Hylan, Mayor of New York, has ordered the Police Commissioner to treat the Klan as he would bomb-throwers, and not to permit the organisatiou to undertake any activities in the city.
Two prominent divines, heads of noted Protestant chuiches, havn replied, defending the Klan, and announcing that the canvass for members will progress despite all opposition, and will be extended to Canada and Great Britain.
Governor Allen, of Kansas, ordered tho Stata District Attorney to tako State-wide legal action against the Klan, and to withdraw its charter and prosecute all members.
Senator "Walsh has appealed to President Harding to order the disbandment of the Klan nationally, citing the precedent of President Grant, who acted against a similarly-named organisation aftei- the Civil War. The Klan opened a meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, attended by delegates from all parts ot the country. There are great rumours surrounding the discussion, but it i& understood the Klan is considering means to protect the organisation against attack. Popular feeling against the Klan is high. ■
