ANNIVERSARY DAY.

FUNCTIONS ARRANGED. A meeting of those interested in celebrating Anniversary Day, December 16th, was held in the Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. The Mayor (Dr. Thacker) presided. In opening the meeting his Worship stated that he felt something should be done to mark the passing of Anniversary Day. He had not expected a very large gathering at that meeting, but explained that it would be necessary to make a start in preparing for the day. Amongst the suggestions which had been made was one by Mr R. B. Owen, who had outlined a scheme for the opening by tha Mayor of the river bank improvements in Chester street. This ceremony could be conducted at 3 p.m. It had also been decided to lay the foundation stone of the new Municipal Buildings in Manchester street on that date.

Mr R. B. Owen suggested that the Provincial Council Chambers should be thrown open to the children, who would thus be afforded an opportunity of gaining some idea of the building methods of the early days. A committee, consisting of the following, was set up to make further arrangements for the celebration of Anniversary Day:—Dr. Thacker (chairman), Rev. F. G. Brittan, Messrs J. S. Cox, E. Claridge, G. Harper, G. Philpott, and Captain McGee.
