Another link with the p~st wa? broken by the death, in Pahiatua, of Mrs Anne Godfrey, relict of the Late H. W. Godfrey. The deceased lady, who was in her eigthy-eightli year, was bom at Ockley, Surrey, England. "With her parents, the late Mr and Mrs William llapley, she sailed for New Zealand in the ship Minerva, in. September, 1802. The ship anchored at Lytte.ton, and the Rapley family settled' at Pfipamii, where the late Mrs Godfrey resided for forty years. She had been a resident of Pahiatua for thirty years.- Her husband predeceased her eight years ago. The deceased lady retained her faculties to the last. She is survived by eight sons and one daughter, Mrs H. E. Morgan, Christchurch. The removal, bodily, of the 600 years old cottage, which is an obstruction to the road improvement scheme at Uiieam Surrey, to a new site a few yards farther back, has been found impossible without risk of the whole building collapsing. On the advice of tho Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings, tho Epsom rural Council had decided to have it taken to pieces and rebuilt with new timber on the new site. It is proposed to use the cottage as an office for the parish records, the parish clerk, and his assistants. An offer of £450 was made by aj.artv of Americans for this cottage to be shipped to their country as a speci- | men of old English architecture. A cyclone burst, over the Department of Seine-tt-Marne, France, recently, doing damage estimated at a million {ranee. Hail fell so thickly that it not melt for many hours. In Seine-et-Oise, also, there was a fall of hail, some of the hailstones being of enormous size. They were heavy enough to break through roofs of houses and workshops. In the fields hares, rabbits, partridges, and birds of all kinds were killed in such numbers as to strew the ground.
