BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The v Canterbury College Board of Governors, met yesterday when there were present: Mr H. D. (chairman), Dean Harper, Rev.. S. Lawry, Hon. G. J. Smith, Dr. C. Chilton, Dr. G. M. L. Lester, Messrs J. C. Adams, T. Hughes, G. T. Booth, J. J. IJougall, C. T. Aschman, J. It- Cuningham, A. E. Flower, A. Fairbairn, H. Boyd, C. H. Opie, L. B. Wood, G. T. Weston.
The chairman said that he had to report that under the amendment to the Canterbury College Act, ilie liector was appointed a member 01 the .board with ruit powers ot voting. He • liad pleasure in welcoming such a distinguished man as Dr. Chilton to tlie .Board.
On the of ,the Museum and Library Committee it was agreed to invite tenders for the erection of the Juvenile Library and also extensions of the .Reference Library. It was also agreed to install a. heating system in the Public Library building. On the recommendation of the College Committee," it was agreed that retiring allowances of six months salary bo paid to Professor W. P. Evans and Mr S. Page. On the recommendation of the subcommittee appointed to consider the question of tne re-classification of the courses, it was agreed that Mr T. W. Howe 'be offered the lectureship in law, and that he take the subjects of Jurisprudence, Roman Law, International Law, and Conflict of Laws. Mr R. A. Cuthbert was offered the assistant lectureship in Commercial Law. It was decided to invite applications for three assistant lecturers in - Law, the subjects to be allotted as follows: Property I. and Contracts; Property 11., Procedure and Conveyancing, and Torts, Criminal Law, and Evidence. Mr E. Hitchcock, general manager of the Christchurch City Council Electricity Department, wrote in reference to obtaining the services of Mr G. GCalvert, of the College engineering staff to assist in making investigations into the proposed Waimakariri hydro-elec-tricity scheme. Mr Hitchcock stated that it would ho a matter for considerable disappointment to the Electricity Department if Mr Calvert's assistance could not be obtained, for he had special qualifications for the work. Tlie investigation, which was to be out under the supervision of a distinguished engineer from abroad, would be of the greatest benefit to Mr Calvert and to the College, and it would rot interfere with his College duties as the work would be done during the vacation. It was agreed to allow Mr Calvert to undertake the work, Board adding that its action in this instance was not to be taken as a precedent.
