SPREYDON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting ot the SpTeydon School Committee was he*d on Tuesday evening Vresent—-liessra E. J. Hawkings 'W. Q. Smith (secretary), J. Mackenzie, V. Lo Metsuiier, R. ilugford, W. "Wills, W. G. Taylor, and J. Voas (headmaster). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs E. Jones and T. Bloor. The headmaster reported that the daily average attendance for the past four weeks had been 225, and that the dit';rict was now fairly free from epidemics. 15i« school bath had received a thorough overhaul, and had been pronounced by the Board's foreman of works to be the bvst in the Canterbury Eduoation District. The deep well which supplies the drinking water for the school had. been cleaned, and a substantial Cyclone wir£ fence had been erected in front of the headmaster's residence. Several large trees had .been felled and split np ready for'being cut into firewood for nest year's supply of fuel. A special vote of thanks was pasked to Measrs Wills and Mackenrie, who had supervised the various improvements which had been made during the monUh. All. arrangements in connexion with the use of the bath by scholars were left in t"he hands of the headmaster. A deputation; consisting of the chairman, the secretary, and Mr Wills, was appointed to wait upon the local Sports Club to suggest the formation o* a c wimmiig Ohib, which would control the use ~of the bath by the general public upon terms agreed "to, by the School Committee. The headmaster reported that a junior branch of the Navy League, was being formed, and tlhat the boys and girls were actively engaged .in cricket and founders. It was agreed to close the school on Scouts' Day, and on the occasion of the genera 1 election. A statement of receipts and expenditure in connexion with the reoent children's festival showed a credit balance of £23, which was considered highly satisfactory. The offer of Mrs Hart to organise a concert for the benefit of. the school funds was accepted,; and arrangements were made for same to Bo held in tho> Coronation Hal] on the 30th inst. It was, reported by the headmaster that the three best boys at the woodwork class had been John Leok. Fred. Stricter, and Eric. Elmes, and the threo best girls at the domes'''" science class had been Rita Smith, Rose -Wills, and ■Elsie Torrens. A letter was received from ■ th© School -Committees' Association in reference to support for the two concerts to be given month in aid of defravin? the expenses of the proposed visit of Chatham Island children to Christoliirch. : It was resolved to have tickets for the concerts nistributftd amongst the scholars.
