In the year 1887, along with a chum, I was spending a holiday at the Quartz Beefs, at Eough Ridge, and in our rambleß we came across what I called a Maori flint quarry (relates a correspondent of the "Otago Daily Times"). Great blocks of white ftint were lying about, and scattered around were a great number of chips—small and big—similar to the pieces that are found in all old Maori camps in the North Harbour district. The blocks lay out in the open on the surface of the ground. A track led from the quarry to the top of the ridge, and wound its way among the rocks, in the direction of the Maniopoto Plains. I found on the track a beautiful piece of flint sin long, chipped into the shape of the Maori chisels. that are found in Maori camps. The quarry is situated on the slopes- of Bough Bidge, right opposite the Oturehua railway station, and not far from the old battery. * Discussing Masterton rents, a business man told the "Age" that the increase in rent within the last few years was excessive, and threatened to drive business away from the town. He quoted, one shop in Queen street, the rent of which had advanced from £7 to £ll in five years; another which had doubled and a third which had advanced from £3 to £6. This sort of thing would kill business, especially, if the present slackness continued, ■t' Asked whether there was anything in the criticism that the Tvust Lands Trust rents were too low, the "Age's" informant said he did not think they Were. They were rea--eonable, considering the prevailing conditions. .
