THE INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION.

! QUESTION OF ACCESS. ! A TEMPORARY BBIDGE. The City Council last night gave authority for the erection of a temporary bridge over the river near Cashel street to provide access to the Industrial Exhibition in the Barracks. The Works Committee reported that the secretary of the Industrial Corporation of New Zealand applied tor permission to erect a pontoon bridge over the river Avon near Cashel street, to be used during the period of the Exhibition. The committee recommended that subject to the Drainage Board's permission being received, tbe request be granted; the position of tne bridge to be to the approval of tne chairman of the Reserves Committee and the work of erection to be to the satisfaction of the city surveyor. The Mayor said the Exhibition executive had interviewed him relative to the erection of a temporary bridge, ana a letter was received from shopkeepers in the locality. The matter was referred to the Works Committee which decided that the council would supply the labour and would build the bridge , if the business people would subscribe 1 the money. The money was subscribed i and the bridge would be erected, and iit was arranged that the temporary bridge should be re-erected in some other part of the city. The city surveyor was opposed to. the idea or a pontoon bridge. The Exhibition executive had also asked him that the council should defer the Bridge of . Remembrance works until the Exhibition had closed. The contractor said that U the works started right away, considerable spaces would be required tor material and spoil. If the starting was delayed the stone already in hand could be worked up in the meantime, and the contractor also said that if the shipping strike were to continue he would be seriously delayed by the failure of stone and cement supplies. Ine contractor was agreeable to the redecking of the Cashel street bridge in order that the bridge might be used during the Exhibition season. Cr.. H. Hunter moved thut the arrangement made for the erection of the temporary bridge should be confirmed. This motion was seconded by Or. A. Williams and carried. In reply to Cr. a. Manhire, the Mayor said the temporary bridge would be of use to the city after the Exhibition and would remain while Eie Bridge of Remembrance was being built, and when the Cashel street bridge was closed. „ „ ~ Replying to Cr. A. McKellar, the Mayor said the contractor did not object to the delay caused by the redecking of tho Cashel street bridge. Cr. J. >A. '•Flesher said that that matter was one really between the Building Committee and the contractors. The Council could only make a recommendation to the Bridge Committee * The Mayor said that that was quite understood. If the Bridge Committee agreed to the Council's recommendation tthen the Cashel sttreet bridge would be redecked and the operations on the foundations would'not be started until the Exhibition closed. Cr. W. H. Winsor said that as the 6tone had arrived it would have to be dumped on the site. The Mayor said the contractors would arrange to store the stone elsewhere. . Cr R. D. Martin said it was a serious thing to hold up the work and so withhold employment from the men. . Cr. Winsor: Nobody will lose work by the delay; not one. ' The Council decided to recommend the Bridge of Remembrance Commit; tee to make an arrangement with the contractor to redeck the Cashel street bridge and to delay operations on the new bridge.works until after the Exhibition had closed.
