♦ GREY HARBOUR BOARD. (special to "the press.") GREYMOUTH, November 8. , At the monthly meeting of the Grey- , mouth Harbour Board, a letter was | considered from the Union S.S. Com- 1 pany complaining of the grounding of ; the Ngakuta on November sth, in consequence of which extra expense and labour had been incurred as . well as risk of structural damage to the ves- 1 sel. It was agreed, on the motion of the chairman (Mr Steer) that the matter be referred to the engineer and harbourmaster to investigate, and, if necessary, after soundings, to put the dredge into commission at once. The harbourmaster said the trouble W(is due to the silting of shingle under the'vesseh' The Greymouth Chamber of Commerce wrote asking if the Board would ( support a proposal to pay one-third of the cost of sinking boreholes on the north side of the Grey river at Brunner. - , The chairman moved that the Marine Department be applied to asking for the use of its boring plant before it i was removed from the district, and that, thei Board'assure the Chamber of Commerce that if the Board has power a grant would be made v , The secretary said the Board was not empowered to . make a grant for work on freehold property. Mr Tennent said tcat if a mine could be developed, it would mean prosperity for the district and revenue for the Board. , The motion was carried. Education Day. There was favourable weather for the opening day's proceedings of the Education Day celebrations, and _ a good attendance of parents and children at Victoria Park this afternoon, when a special drill programme was successfully performed. Mining Matters. The Paparoa miners are reported not to be working. It is reported that Mr W.' Leich, of the Avoca mine, who took up a lease adjoining the Blackball Coal Co.'s property, has sold it to an Australian syndicate. Personal. Mr Walter Scott, inspector of stock for "Westland, is under orders to transfer at an early date. Oibituary. The death of Mr Michael Fitzgerald, of Kumara, qt the Old People's Home, Kumara,. at the.age of 83 years, .has removed another of the early band of pioneers. He was a native of Ireland and came to New Zealand 56 years ' ago, following the occupation of a gold miner. He lived for many years« at Okarito, South Westland. Funeral The funeral of the late Mr J. S. Nash took place at Karoro cemetery - this afternoon, and was , very largely attended. . The cortege was headed by members of the Druids and Masonic Lodges, who paraded_ in force. The Greymouth Defence . Rifle Club and the areymouth Boxing Association were >ther organisations represented, and there was also a large attendance of the general public. The Ven. Archdeacon , Carr conducted the services at Holy Trinity Church and the graveside. The burial services of the Druids I and Freemasons were'also read. 1
