CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

METROPOLITAN MEETING. CANTERBURY CUP AND OAKS DAY. Although possibly the quietest day of* the Metropolitan, Meeting, the third' day has a charm peculiarly its own, nnd the racing is generally quite up to the standard of the two preceding days. The card for to-day provides good fare for all, the time-honoured long-distance race, the Canterbury Cup, having a very promising appearance, and the fillies' race, the Oaks, should be a much better contest than the Derby. The handicap events are again most open ire appearance, and good-sized fields are the order. The most extraordinary feature in connexion with the Canterbury Cup is. the absence of the three-yc ar-olds. ginning Hit, Cupidon, and Bonnie Winkie were, all three-year-olds of last season with pretensions to class, and their efforts against proved older horses at weight-for-age over this long two miles and a quarter course will be followed with Bonnie Winkie has renlly the best credentials of the fourj year-olds, but he will find a very worthy opponent in Gasbag, although the bearers of the black and white livery are not racing over-luckily at the Meeting. The Oaks is doubtless regarded ! as practically a certainty for Enthusi--1 asm, more especially after the result of the Derby. With the Oaks 'solidly run from end to end, the Canterburyowned Ardour may at least extend the Panmure filly, but she is set a hard task. ■Gold Light races as if she may stay, but Lovesign has, hitherto been raced over only sprint courses. The J-ockey Club Handicap is always a. popular-race, and that for to-day should provide a splendid contest. The issue looks decidedly open, but a useful trio may be King's Trumpeter, Anomaly, and Sunny Loch. The Spring Nursery seems likely to provide one newcomer in Dinner Bell. f l>ut the experienced ones, will doubtless be preferred, and of these Panfagruel seems an improving sort. If Passenger is in a galloping mood, the Port Cooper Hurdles should not be a very hard task for him. The Otaio Plate, now reduced to a mile and a quarter, has drawn a rather bet-ter-class field than hitherto. Kilgour, on his New Zealand Cup form, reads well, while Angelo is a very useful galloper. A big field of hacks will be seen out in the Ashley Handicap, when the apprentice-jockeys again have their turn. Redlogue hns been racing consistently at the Meeting, The Avon Welter has drawn a good field, but there may be some detections, for several horses have) engagements earlier in the day. Several horses will be making their first-appearance at the Meeting, and there should be some keen speculation. A likely trio may be Maioha, Danger Zone, and Red Kriss. There will again be an efficient train and tram service for the convenience of the club's patrons. The following ia the card day:— Noon.—PORT COOPER HURDLES, of 600
