Mr Claude Cooper, captain of the Surf Club, said tisai, he "could assure the Gala Commit tee that hi> club would give every assistance, narticularly m taking solo charge of the beach events. 'llie chairman said that he was quite satisfied that everything was moving iorward to a satisfactory conclusion. In discussing the appointment of officials it had been the custom to elect all past Mayors of the borough io the position of vice-presidents of the annual gala, and lie ielfc that the custom should not bo departed from. He vvoulcl move m tnat direction, but in his motion he would like to include that the members of the present Borough Council be also elected vice-presidents for the gala of 1923. Tho motion wasi carried unanimously.

It lvas agreed that any addition to the list of vice-presidents should ho dcicrred till ji later meeting. In reply to Mr Hemes the chairman said it iras confidently hoped to raise £IOOO by means of tho gala. Correspondence was received from Mr "VV. E. Leadlcv concern ins.!: the war memorial, and it v t -as decided to defer this matter for discussion at a more representative gathering. On tlie motion of Mr J. Scott, it was that the several hands ot Christclmvch be written to asking them to lend assistance by giving public concerts atwhich collections could be taken up in aid of the gala. On behalf of the ladies' committee Mrs Bellamy reported that a jumble sale was being held in aid of the funds ol the erala on Saturday, October 28tH, arid she would liko the assistance of two or more members of the men's committee to assist at the sale. A grant of £lO was made to the committee lor tho purchase of material for tho bazaar to bo held at the time of the gala. On Mr HcrrickV motion it was resolved that the secretary notify all ocal bodies, sports clubs, and other local organisations of the date of the next meeting, so that on© or two important matters might bo discussed.

Borough Progress-. Iri regard to the steady progress that ftew Brighton has been making, particularly during tho past eight months, it Juay be stated that tho aggregate valuo of building permits applied for during that period was £35,286, or nearly double that of the corresponding period of last year (£17,775). Owing to tho rapidly increasing business and borough requircmente, oxkuimvo alterations anri additions to tho Council Chambers were found to bo absolutely necessary. Th«>o include a public office, strong-room, town clerk's office, and Mayor's office, and they hay© now been completed. Alterations and additions to the Fire Brigade Station are shortly to lie commenced to provide accommodation for the new fire engine and other fire-fighting plant shortly to arrive.
