UNEMPLOYMENT.
MEETING OP COMMITTEE. Tho North Canterbury Unemployed Committee met yesterday. Mr W. Goes presided, and there were also pro* sent Messrs C. Benjamin, W. E. Loadley, W. H, Winsor, H. Holland, M. T. Armstrong, H. Worruil, W. J. Jenkin, and S. F. Marshall (secretary). Tho treasurer reported, that £5-4 I<3b 5d had been received during the week. There was a credit balance of £42 I.Bs, and ho recommended that the 30 men employed in the gardens ba kept on? but that bo changed to give others a chance. There was another £2O i Q hand which had arrived after tho statement of accounts bad been made opt. Mr Winsor reported that ho and the secretary had addressed a gathering of men at the Addington workshops. They had received an attentive but not very sympathetic hearing, the men objecting to the payment of rates below those of'the Arbitration Court's award. Mr Worrall reported 011 the number of men on tho books of the Trades and Labour Council. The total was "1, made up ag follows.—-Plasterers S, printers 5, enginednvers 7, engineers and electricians 21, labourers 21, moulders 14, Mr Winsor said that there was plentyof work for genuine plasterers. The chairman said ha thought that the -committee should now consider tho matter of concluding its activities, as there was not a great deal of financial support forthcoming. Several members expressed the opinion that there was great heed to con-, tinuo tho work of tho committee, as there was not yet sufficient work either in town or country. ■ It was decided to continue the activities of the committee till Christmas, if funds permitted. It was decided to apply to the managers of the banks and insurance companies for assistance.
