CONCILIATION COUNCIL.

CYCLE WORKERS* DISPUTE. ] Tho dispute between the cycle workers' section of the Amalgamated En.gineering Union and the employers was heard before a Council of Conciliation yesterday. Mr W.'H. Hagger, Concili-! ation Commissioner, presided. Messrs A. E. Scott (Dunedin), J. D. Campbell (Invercargill) and 0. Bell j(Christchurch) were the employers' assessors, with Mr J. F. Cousins as agent. Messrs W. Heapy, T. Beck, and S. W. King were the Union's assessors, with Mr It. F. Barter as agent. > The union asked for a 44-houra' week, the employers for 47 hours. The union asked tnat work in excess of 44 hours, and on statutory holidays should be paid for at the rate of double time; the employers offered double time for work done on Sundays and statutory holidays and time and a quarter for tho first two hours worked in excess of the weekly hours, time and a half for the next two hours, and double time thereafter. The Union asked for wages for workers over 22 years of age employed at polishing, plating, enamelling, frame building, and wheel building, and to turners, repairers and assemblers 2s 4d per hour; foremen 5s per day extra; men directed to take charge of a particular job extending for one day or more, 2s 6d per day extra. The employers offered Is 9d per hour for polishers, turners, welders, vu'lcanisers, and motpr-oycle mechanics; all"other workers la 7|d per h° ur - .j As to holidays, it was agreed .to add to 'those in the present award the Sovereign's Birthday and-Anzao Day. Hours were agreed to as in the existing hours; present conditions as to overtime were agreed to. A 9 to apprentices, a clause dealing with' assistants in operation in Dunedin was agreed to. Regarding "matters not provided for," the Court's clause was adopted. A clause was agreed to,providing for any worker being recognised as a shoo steward through whom, all complaints to tho Union should -be made: the request for the right of entrv of union officials upon employers premises was opposed. # No agreement was-arrived at regarding wages, and this matter will be referred to the Court. I At the conclusion of the proceedings, Mr Cousins referred to the friendly manner in which matters had been discussed and mentioned that in previous disputes the parties had been able to come to a complete agreement..
