PAMPHLET No. 13.

COUNCIL OP EDUCATION RESOLUTION. (rRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON. June 22. The Council of Education discussed Mr McCallum's motion that the council considers that temperance teaching should be so revised as to avoid creating a conflict of ideas in the child's mind in regard to normal family life, and should be so framed as to secure the sympathetic support of all parents and 60 that all teacuera may conscientiously instruct children without such instruction conflicting with their own personal habits of lite. Mr McOallum said it was a pity that the matter had come up at all, andj that the nad not been more subtle in aealing with the question in the first place. Pamphlet No. 13 was not a fair exposition of the teaching that their country should countenance. The pamphlet was not wisely framed. Tne Department should not put . its imprimatur on such a document 'which was not correct in matters of detail and and attempted to raise a bogey regarding the effects of alcohol on the human body. The Hon. D. P. Fleming seconded Mr McCallum's motion. Miss Chaplin deprecated raising the issue. If the resolution were carried, teachers would, not be allowed to teach children anything about, things in which their parents were at fault. Finally "an amendment by Mr W. A. Banks (Rangiora), seconded by Mr E. C. Banks (Auckland). "That the Council congratulates the Department on the issue of pamphlet /so. 13," was adopted by nine votes to five. »
