DRY SPELL IN NEW SOUTH WALES.
WATER SUPPLY DEPLETED.
. (By . Cable—Press (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, April 22. 'Summer's failure to observe the official dictum that it ends with March and the continued indications of further possible April thermometer records are causing the water supply officials alarm. The unuusualiy hot and droughty conditions of the last few weeks, and the continued influx of Easter visitors, have resulted in 'heavy depletions of■ the water supply. .Failing rain, strict restrictions are expected. As a.; first step, the ■Water Board will stop all extensions until the position improves. The return todroughty conditions has revived the proposal for locking the Lachlan river, thereby freeing large areas of the rich western lands from drought, and opening - the country to .closer settlement. The scheme, which would involve the expenditure of millions of pounds, would water practically the whole- of the Lachlan Valley.
