AMERICAN MINERS' STRIKE
NEARLY 700,000 IDLE.

The miners' leaders claim that the strikers now number 680,000. So far industries have not been seriously affected.
SHIPBUILDERS' DISPUTE.
WORK GOING ABROAD. LONDON, April 21. Owing to the stoppage of work in the shipyards shipowners are sending repair and refitting work abroad. The new Canard liner Laconia has gone to Rotterdam from the Tyne to complete her fitting-out.
WIRELESS OPERATORS' STRIKE.
BASIS OF NEGOTIATIONS. (Received April 23rd, 0.0 p.m.) LONDON, April 22. The wireless operators have reached a basis of negotiations with the Marconi Wireless Company and will resume work immediately. [The Association of Wireless and Cable Telegraphists called out the wireless operators on April 9th owing to the shipowners ■ claiming the right to order them to perform other than wireless duties. The shipowners refused to negotiate with the Association on the ground that wireless operators were not the employees of the shipowners but of I the wireless companies.]
UNEMPLOYMENT IN N.S.W.
OFFICIAL FIGURES. (Received April 23rd, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 22. The report of the State labour exchanges shows that at the end of March there were 6000 unemployed in Sydney and "000 in the country.
NEWCASTLE STEEL WORKS.
(Received April 23rd, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 22. Speaking at the annual dinner of th« Institute of Engineers at Newcastle Mr Baker, manager of the Newcastle steel works, said the works had now stopped development, and in a few days would stop producing altogether, as the company could not manufacture at a loss. He said if they had cheaper coal they would be able to compete with the English iron and steel manufacturers.
