CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING. .". The Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting has always been one of the most popular fixtures of the latter part of the racing season, and though the representation of North Island horses at the meeting which opens at Riccarton to-day is not so formidable as usual, the fields are quite large enough and of good enough clas9 to furnish some very interesting racing. The oonrse in in first-cLass order, and there is every promise of a meeting which will quite maintain the high standard that is characteristic of Biccarton. Racing will commence with the Kildaae Hurdle Handicap, in which nine horses have been paid iit> for. They «vre a moderate lot, but being much of a class they will provide a good contest, in which Dick and Gamecock should play a prominent part. This will be followed'by the Champagne .Stakes, and the Absurd—Our Lady colt _ Farceur looks to have the race «t his mercy. The valuable Great Easter Handicap has drawn a good field, and though. Mireusonta ie a. staunch favourite, the race is not by any means over. To begin with, Mireusonta has yet to prove himself over seven .furlongs, and a sevenfurlong event at Riccarton is as hard to win as a mile race on any other track in the Dominion. The favourite was a trifle lame in front when exercised yesterday morning, and he will need to be at his best if be is to even get a place, not to say win, among the good horses be has to meet. Any one of the nine weighted above him is capable of making the Absurd gelding do his utmost, for their work on the track (has been remarkably good, and it would be invidious to make any particular selection from such a good class and fit lot of horses. There are only three horses in the Sockburn Handicap, but racing history tells many stories of straggles between three horses of a class, and this_ may well prove another, for there is .little to chot«e ■ l>etween the tlhree. Angelo will prribably go out favourite, more on account of the colours ho will carry than any superiority over his opponents. The usual special trams will begin to run to the course at an early hour, while special trains will leave the Christchurch station for Riccarton at intervals from 10.10 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.' The first rate will start at 11.30 a.m.. ana the day's card is as follows: 11.30 a.m.—KILDAEE HURDLE HANDICAP, of 400 sova. 2m.
