Superstition is still an attribute of the human character, as is shown by an occurrence reported to have taken place in a New Plymouth church graveyard recently. Outside the church is a fairly large hole in the ground, lined with wood, and usually covered over, which enables the pipe supplying water for driving the organ mechanism to be reached. A man was. crouching down in this hole carrying out some adjustment or repair. A lady entered the churchyard and wandered along, reading the inscriptions on the headstones —an occupation which absorbs the attention. The man raised his head out of the hole, the movement caught the lady's eye, and she gave one glance and fled. The man fol.owed to explain. The faster he ran the faster she ran, the story goes, but just hpw it-ended is not tol<T. /*
