CITY DEATH RATES.
Death rates per 1000 of population for the four principal cities and the corresponding urban areas for March are given as follows in .the "Gazette" (urban areas given in parentheses) : Auckland, 0.87 (0.70) ; Wellington, 0.80 (0.77) : Christ-church, 0.83 (0.71.): Duuediu. 011 (0.01). Including the suburban portions, J)unedin is the hiahest anil Auckland the lowest. Compared with the eoresponding mouth'of the preceding year, tlie results for the urban areas are:
The total births registered for the four principal urban areas amounted to 818, as agaiust 739 in February, r-u increase of S9. The deaths in March wero 331, an increase of -10 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 160, females 168. Forty-eight of the deaths were of children under five vears of age, being 14.34 per cent, of the whole number. Thirty-two .of these were under one year of age.
