NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Poppy Day. A meeting of ladies convened by tbe Mayoress (Mi's J. Gamble) was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday afternoon.' The Rev. W. Walker was present iwd explained the sclieme in connexion with the celebration of Poppy Day. He 6tated that after the armistice the people in the devastated areas of Belgium aild Franc© were faced with almost insuperable difficulties. As a ibeang to helping them in their great need, they decided to make hundreds of thousands of artificial poppies and sell them to Allied countries whose homes had been unharmed. When appealed to the New Zealand returned soldiera decided to co-operate and 400,000 poppiies were obtained. As these red flowers are symbolic of the sorrow and the sacrifice of the war, it was deemed admirable to make it the national emblem of Anzac Day. They are to be sold at Is each, 3d of which will be forwarded to the sufferers and people in thp war zone, and the remainder will be available for the employment of returned' soldiers during; the coming winter. After hearing the explanation, it was decided to make a house-to-house canvass on April 22nd and 24th. The next meeting is to be held on Friday at 7.30 p.m., in the Council Chambers, when the poppies will be available. It is hoped that £0 to 100 ladies will offer to assist in this most worthy object, especially in view of the fact that the amount raised within the Borough will be rvnilable_ for necessary work therein.
