SPORTING.

Nominations for the Southland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting close at 5 o'clock this evening.

Acceptances for the TYcstport Jockey Club's Annual Meeting close to-night at 9 o'clock.

Acceptances for the Cheviot R.C Annual Meeting close to-morrow.

Merry Day, the winner of the Trial Plate and Stewards' Handicap at Masterton on Saturday, is a three-year-old filly by Merry Moment, from that useful mare Labour Dr.y. Merry Dav had been third in two of henlast three starts, and no doubt would be well fancied for the Trial Jl'iate. despite ' fact that the Ki'broney—Bieriot gelding Te Kuri, was regarded in some quarters as unbeatable.

, Kilreid, the Telephone Handicap winner, is a three-year-old gelding by Kilbronev —Amber and White, who carries the colours of the Wairarapa sportsman Mr C. F. Vallance. Kilreid has not had a particularly good season, Saturday's win being hi 3 second in thirteen starts.

Mr Vallance was represented by another winner in Pencils, in tlie Juvenile Handicap. Peneus. who has now won throe races on end, is a half-brother by B'Onifnrm to his stablemate Little River, Blue Lake, a speedy mare in her day, being the dam of both. Askari, winner of the Flying Handicap. has had his share of racing, for he has started twenty times tin's ser.son. He has won three times, and been four times in a minor - place. Askari is a four-year-old ge'dir.g by Kilbronev—Lady Jean 11., bo a halfbrother to Scion. Bitters demonstrated his return to form by winning the principal event in a very easy fashion. Bitters, who is a five-year-old gelding by Advance —Endeavour, showed very promising form in the spring, and won twice, was once second, once third, and twice unplaced in Tlx starts. He was .subsequently spelled, and, after one unplaced performance, he captured the Autumn Handicap on Saturday. It 13 remarkab'e that since Endeavour went to the stud in 1903, her only consort has been Advance, possibly the best result of the union being the 1909 foal, better known as Expect. Birkenella, winner of the Masterfon Welter, is a four-year-old brown gelding by Birkenhead —Conella, the latter a particularly well bred mare bv the Maltster horse Alnwa, from Crucinella, by Sau Franc is c r>—Cl iaren te, by Nordenfeldt. Birkenel'.a being the first foal. Birkenella was not started until shortly before the Christmas Meetings, and he has won twice, and been once second in eight starts.

Ambitious, in tho Dash Handicap, was the only progeny of Absurd to win during the afternoon.: Ambitious, who is a three-year-old filly by Absurd— Ursula, has won twice in three starts this season.

Snake, who won the_ Hurdles at the Ohinemuri R.C.'s Meeting on Saturday, aftor being runner-up on the- opening day, must be one of the most consistent horses in the North, if not in the whole of th© Dominion. He has been kept well up to the collar, for the Quin Abbey gelding has contested .twentyoiie races, in which he has been the winner in seven, second in five, and third in two.

Tinohoro is another Quin Abbey that has done his share of racing, and lii 3 wm in the Paeroa Handicap was not without merit, for some verv useful horses finished behind him. Tinohoro is a five-year-old bay horse by Quin Abbey—Mignon, Saturday's race providing his third win for the. season. The aged chestnut mare Koura, winner of both steeplechases, was also successful w-hen last seen under si'.k. Koura, who baa started only eight times this season fcr four wins, and one third, is by Salvadan—-Golden Sands.

Pavo proved to be another in a successful vein, his wins in the St. Patrisk's Handicap and Waihi Handicap making three in succession; indeed, the iive-year-old son pi 'The Welkin —Land Rose is proving a profitable investment for the ex-Afchourton sportsman, Mr H. Friedlander. "Pavo has won four races, and been second four times this season in fifteen starts..

Irapuka, winner of the St. Patrick's Handicap at the Opunake Meeting. is a five-year-old brown gelding by Our King—lranui, by SouTt—Tauhei. by Castor —Vivandiere, by Musket. Irapuka had not started since the North Taranaki Hunt Meeting early- last September, but despite this, it was reported that he waa well fancied for Friday's race.

The nominations for the Manawatu Racing Club's Autumn Meeting are in every way satisfactory. The handicaps big and small have filled well, and a good class of horse is engaged. South Island etablos are represented in the more important events, and apparently some of the horses engaged at Trentham are to go on to Awapuni. Winning Hit, Amythas, Radiant Light, Thespian, and Kick Off, arc amongst the twelve ■ that have been nominated for the Awapuni Gold Cup, a notable absentee from the list being Gloaming. Epitaph has been paid up for in the Sires' Produce Stakes and Manawatu Stakes,, together with practically the best of her age. Mountain Lion, Enthusiasm, King's Trumpter, Highland, and Peneus, the exception being Farceur. Prince Tressady, the winner of the Orrong Two-Year-Old Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday, ran his best rac© at the V.R.C. meeting in the Sires' Produce Stakes on the opening day, When he waa third to Scarlet and Caserta, after being interfered with in the straight. Prince Tresfcady was unplaced in the Ascotvnle Stakes on the second day, but he lost any chance of winning by commencing very slowly. Gringalet's win in the St. Kilda Cup would probably be a benefit for the layers, for at the recent V.R.C. meeivig

ho vrs3 running unseen and unbacked in the minor distance handicaps. Flavin, the .sire of Gringalet, was a good stayer, and iron a number of fair handicaps over a distance, Flavins, h's sire, being noted for leaving stayers.

The nominations for the Hiverton Racing Club's annual meeting roreal few outside entries, but for all that the races have filled Darticularly well. Tnboulet is practically tho only "outsider" and with the Kilbroney gelding showing good form a trip to the south should prove profitable. A Press Association telegram, from "Wellington states that the following rehand irans have been declared for the Rangitikei annual meeting:—Scott Memorial Handicap, Voluble 71b, Parewanui Welter Handicap, Pass in Through 71b.

Acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club's annual meeting close at 9 p.m. to-dnv.

Since their return from Blenheim Dollv Dillon and Cnrbinia are on the easy list, and are unlikely to fulfil their engagements at Timaru. At a recent meeting of the Owners' and Breeders' Association, a lengthy discussion took place regarding the transport of horses to trotting fixtures, Complaints were received from trainers, who had horses racing at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's Summer Meeting, and in view of the fact that there 'yns little hope of better treatment being meted out by the Railway Department, it was resolved to make enquiries as to the possibility of horses travelling from Lyttlclton to Dunedin by steamer. This has been done and a satisfactory reply lias been received, and if carried into effect, the cost of transport will be reduced by one half, while the loss of revenue to the Departnint be between £2OOO and £2SCO for the three meetings.

A special general meeting of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Associat ion will be held on Wednesday, M:uch_ 22nd. The business to come txjfore tho meeting will inciu'le handicapping, starting, and an applicatiory-from th© Lewisham Hospital Committee to hold a trotting meeting to raise funds for its new building scheme.

Prompted by a t'esire fpr the public weal, the Dunedin Jockey Club's Committee has resolved to apply to the Minister of Internal Affairs for a totalizator permit for a special benefit race meeting to be held on April 22nd, a Saturday, so as to try to raise funds for sonic worthy public object, the nature of which is to bo decided by a, sub-committee. A spare permit is available owing to the Lakes County Club dropping out this season. There are various suggestions as to the purpose to • which the profit shall be applied- One of these is the Dunedin War Memorial Fund, which so far has 'not roused tho imagination of the citizens as a body.
