"THE EDUCATION GAZETTE"
TO TIIZ EDITOtt OP "TBZ PBE ' B " Sir,—The country word "Retrenchment ; the * Ec iucaDcoartments ring 'Kith .. j t , j s tion Department tibrills e d—who good. Retrenchment ls.neea will deny it? Bare deft ,t juU thrust itself upon us , lll ' e ,, e -tf a «todon monster, uglier even than tee .Ji , named "Teachers' Grading ■ „ ca tion To-day (tlie 7th) the £* uc ? vith Gazette"' arrived—Mar ch ° a "V ' loro feverish, haste the headte anticiawav the wrapper, eager " artmenta l pat-ton of rood from the -Uep table—food enough for hi rose ) teaching colleagues. But, food it contained could not wronr ; eome was stale and some th ° diet. You will be nue.ested to what this costly retrenched tood kjs, so I here outline the full menu. "Passing Notes;': (Four short notes ot little practical value)- . "Enquiry Column": (One tee Ic eacj ury that should have been made to an "Oa&'of Allegiance'': (Of which we have already had notice). "Treatment of Children's Teeth..principles for guidance of dentists and these come to our schools). ; "Amendments to Repuati°ns - U - probationer told me about the' month ago!) , _ 0f "N"otes on Teach-ins; of Frencll . (JJT no use to the great army of pr,mary teachers. Good notes, but most secondary teachers probably know how to tench French). ''Superannuation" : (Rcre've-1 th's vnior-nr-tion from the local Board over a week ago). . . "Reguiations for Salaries Adjustments" : (Which we tearful\ perused in your v; luab'e paper some time ago). "Vacancies"': (Which appeared in our own "National Education, ' to hand before the "Gazette"). To liow many tfeachers has this month's "Gazette'' been useful Th 6 Departmental brains must have been sadly taxed to fill its seven pages! When we consider that we already have a good journal, the editor of which would gladly in&ert all essentials concerning teaching and teachers, we arc. filled with righteous indignation, for with its right hand the Department is saving money by reducing our salaries, and with its left hand is wasting some of this saved money by publishing t)he "Gazette." Will you join with me, Sir, in the chorus, "Such retrenchment is a humbug"?— Yours, etc., JUST REDUCED £lO.
