"Set* a thief to catch a thief" goes the ojd saying, and "Set a beetle to catch a beetle," echoes the Eastern fannere ,of the United States. For some time past various, gardens in tho Eastern States have been-troubled by i a small leaf-eating beetle that has done jgreat damage to crops, and now a particularly ferocious beetle has been im-ported-from Japan, which it is hoped will, attack and get rid of the. pest. So far only 5000 of the attacking army i have been_ employed in' certain districts, but if their work proves to be as deadly, as is expected, larger consignments will be made use of. This is another case of man using an insect to help in his work, as the city of Glasgow is now doing.
