A London correspondent who knew the laie Mr John D. Duntop well state* that joth in Belfast and Dublin he wa» a picturesque figure, whose repntud great wealth was, as ho often said, quite legendary. John Dunlop had the simplest tastes, was a most retiring man, and, apart from his work as inventor of the pneumatic tyre, he wa» a veterinary surgeon of much skill. In spite.of the great commercial exploitation of til,, Dunlop tyre, he used to admit with a smilo that ho himself was "hopeless at business." The death of his son two years ago was a great blow to him. Strange as it may seem, Iceland has run short of ice. and urgent requests for immediate shipments of that commodity have been sent to Norway. Herring fishing, Iceland's principal industry, is in grave danger, a 9 ice is required for packing the Mi, which :;re exported in largo quantities. This ke shortage has been caused by an unusually mild winter. On the north coast of the island there is ice without limit, but there are no means of transporting it to the districts where it is required. Hence fho urgent appeals for shipments of ice from other parts in order to save the herring industry.
