Whtn he was taken to tho condemned cell at Versailles Inst night Landru dropped on to a stool and said to the warder: "It is time the trial finished, as I am terribly tired." The grating in tho middle of tho cell door is always open, and the warder is watching to prevent Landru committing suicide. Tho staying power of Landru throughout was amazing. His counsel, M. Giafferi, wan most affected during tho closing scenes, and when tho judges were deliberating after the verdict Landru smilingly remarked to M. Giafferi: "So th e condemned man hastens to console his counsel," adding to himself that ho would sleep as calmly as ever. Landru, listened calmly and most respectfully to tho sentence, whioh proscribed that he would have his head cut off in an open spnee at Versailles. Then he protested his innocence. During the last day of the trial, gazing at the wo-' men who were shamelessly struggling for seats, Lnndru was heard to remark: "If any of the ladies like my place 1 will willingly give it up."
