OBITUARY.

The death occurred at Auckland on Friday of Mr J- T. Reid, chief warder at the Mount Ederi prison. The deceased, who. was a son of the late Mr Solomoti) Reid, of Auckland, was for some years engaged in mining on the Thames and Ohinemuri goldfields. He subsequently entered the Government service in the Prisons Department, and was for some time stationed at the Borstal Institution, Invercargill. Mr Reid was transferred to Mount Eden prison about four years ago. He is survived by Mrs Reid and a young family. The death of a centenarian, Mr Mackie, who foupjht in Hone Heke's war in 1845, is reported from Whananaki, near Hikurangi. As nearly as can be ascertained Mr Mnckie had passed his 105 th birthday. He was actively engaged on the side of the Europeans at Kororareka in 1845, and was at Kuapekapeka when the pa. was stormed and taken on January 11th, 1846.
