SPORTING.

General entries for the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting, and first forfeits for the Great Northern Derby, Great Northern Foal Stakes, and Royal Stakes are due at 5 p.m. to-morrow. ' In connexion with the Methven Racing Club's Annual Meeting on Saturday, a special passenger train will leave Christchurch for Methven at 7.40 a.m., returning at 6.10 p.m. In winning the Feilding Stakes yesterday, Gloaming registered his eighteenth successive victory. In the season of 1919-20, after finishing second to Poitrel in the Spring Stakes at Randwick. Gloaming won the Craven Plate, and then on his return to New Zealand won the four events that he contested. Last season ho had an unbroken record of twelve wins. Up to the present time he has started in 36 races, won 32 of them, been second three times, and only once unplaced, this being when he fell in the North Island Challenge Stakes. Despite all rumours to the contrary, there is everv reason to believe that the Hector Grav-S.isnnof combination will be on hand at Ellerslie ou Boxing Day. The mighty fallen! Achilles is now standing in the North Coast district of N.S.W. at the very modest fee of five guineas. Public form often proves a better guide than the most inspired information. To this end, "Form at a Glance" should form part of every racing man's equipment. "Form at a Glance." which is complete in every detail in both racine and trotting sections, will be published about the middle of December by the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd. In the Melrose Handicap at Tnkapuna, of the twenty-nine starters, owing to allowances and over-weights, no fewer than thirteen carried other than their handicap weights. Egmont Park, who finished second to Paoanui in the St. Andrew's Handicap at Feilding, yesterday, was not telegraphed as an acceptor in that event. An unusual, objection was raised against the installation of automatic totalisators in South Africa, in that they would be continually out of order owing to cockroaches and other insects getting into the working parts. It was pointed out that no trouble was experienced with these machines in Calcutta and Poona, and India in the rainy season lis a more_ insect-infested country than South Africa. Gold Kip, winner of the St. Andrew's Handicap at Takapuna yesterday, was in the money in this race last year, when Cleft. Bst, won from Tinopai, 6st 187b. with Gold Kip. 7st 121b. and Lord Kenilworth, 6st 101b, a dead-heat for third nlace. Gold Kip was handicapped at 8st"lllb yesterday,, as compared with Bst 81b in the Alison Cup on Saturday, when he finished out of a place. Crowhurst, a double winner over hurdles at Takapuna, is a half-brother by Rokeby to that smart sprinter Bmdle. The" breeding. of Happy Valley, dam of Bhidle and Crowhurst, recalls memories, as she is by Wallace—Faraway, by Bill of Portland—Happy Land, by Musket. It is expected that the South Canterbury Jockey Club's recent meeting will result in a profit to the club of about £2OO. Government taxation on the fixture totals about £2099. . Of the twoWe starters for tbe Stanley Handicap, Approach and Crowhurst nearly equally supported, carried almost half the pool. Pepin led past the stand, but at the back Approach, Otara, and Crowhuret drew up, and coming for home, the last-named had the race in saie keeping, winning by two lengths, a good race for second place ending in Otara beating Pepin by a neck, Uctoplete being fourth.

There were ten starters for the Cautley Handicap, Tama-a-roa being made a very eoiid favourite, with the Cambridge pair, King Abßey and Queen Abbey, bracketed, next in demand. Queen Abbey led Namutcro and Golden Bubble for three furlongs, and then Golden Bubble had his neck in front tor another furlong, but entering the otraight Infante- an 1 Tama-a-roa came on the scene, and drawing away, fought out a good finish, Tama-a-Toa winninc Hy' a head. Broadwood finished wall in 'third place, with Pavo fourth and Golden Bubble next, . The fine field of twenty-two came out for the Vauxhail mum. Cold Steel was a heavily backed one, and Te Akitai came in for more rapport than Dactylis, 'Wrangle, and Wanigan. The lead was-taken-after they had gono a furlong by Midget, but before the last quarter was entered, upon a number w«ie well bunched, Midget, Gold Hud, Wrangle, and Lady Patience being well in the lead. In the straight Wrangle came " out to win jiarriily by a length and a half from Gold Bud, who beat Midget a neck, their' coming Lady Patisnco. Backers of the divkiei.d payers had reason to be more than. pleated with the returns they received. Ten were left in the St. Andrew's Handicap after.the scratching of Tama-a-roa, Insurrection, Arch Salute, ai d Queens Up. Illumination was the heaviest buppbrted of the Meeting, but Tinohoro had also a big backing, and then came Gold Kip, Raeefui, and Stork, jplje favourite began the smartest from an excellent start, and led past the

stand out of the straight and' round the bnck, where Geoffrey was racing in second place. Three furlongs from home the field wa? well bunched. In the straight with heads turned for homo there was a great race. Gold Kip, Stork, and Tiuohoro came - on nbronst. and the top weight finishing t the strongest, won by a length, Tinohoro ■, less than that off third: Starlarri, Ilhif mination, and Geoffrey ue'l up. A field of sixteen two-year-olds lined out for the Eakino Handicap, Refinement being j- a decided favourite, though Kncle Alex, who won on Saturday, was C.190 well supported, ns were Ad Astra and Shebang. The public summed up the situation well. Uncle Alex ' led practically all tho way, and ridden oujt only won from Kefinement by the narrowest . margin, Ad Astra, who came. through from the middla of the field, setting into third s place, just in front of Flying Cornet. p A field of eighteen came out for the i Pupuke Hack Handicap, Prince Abbey and t unrant being nearly equally fancied, with n Boomei'iay and lte:\ lioh a.so well supported. . Prinoc Abbey made a s°°d deal of the running, but over the concluding stages e Boomerday and Some Fashion stayed on, 1- the first nnnieU winning by two lengths, 0 Mangawhero and Esplanade, either of whom 5 would have pa>J a big dividend following J the pair home at close intervals. Boomerday has steadily improved, and has kept earning ' more weight after each performance, and w ;1 still in the hack class, and so also is Some Fashion. Tho Kawau Handicap Hurdle field num- : bered eight. Hyginas, the favourite, fell at • the first hurdle. Poanui was leading Killard n at the last hurdle, where both fell, and ■X, Loyal Arch came on and won by over two lengths from Otara, whose fourth race it was during the two days. Multiplane and v Snake wera well back. E. Warner, the rider t of Poanui, was brought in in tho ambulance f apparently suffering greatly. The other riders were not hurt. , The business of the Meeting wound up r with a sixteen horse field in the* Weltor - Handicap. Arch Salute was favourite, with 1 Scrap 0' Paper, Royal Abbey, and Archie r next in demand. Over the last quarter of - a mile it looked like Archie, and this gelding came in. easily a length olear of Bocks' field, who beat Royal Abbey by nearly the - same margin. Clonmel, who was prominent s for five furlongs, was several lengths away 1 at' the head of a strung out lot. FEILDING J.C.'S SPRING MEETING. (rRESS ASSOCIATION" TELEGRAM.) FEILDING, November 80. GLOAMING'S. VICTORY. 9 (SPECIAL t« "THE TRESS.") b . FEILDING, Number SO. 1 There *as glorioue weather for the o'peninjf 5 of tlit. Fcilding Jockey Club's Spring MfeotinS » to-day, and a good attendance to witness a 1 capital afternoon's racing. The star »J*m in the card was the Sixteenth Feildahff Stakes, ' in-which a good tussle between Gloaming and i Rational was expected by people whohnf, ; accepted the current istory that Gloaming was 1 a good deal below his beat form, and that the a three-year-old had been galloping, extraordinU arily well. The owner of the ohampiory who 1 was paving his first visit to the course, made ; no secret of the fact that he had come-up ; to tee his horse win, and that he would be V a fairly good bet at substantial'odds_ on. • Rationale 'riends, on the other hand, doubted the ability of the gelding, with his penalty of • 101b, to make much of a show against t Gloaming, who was looking extraordinarily 1 fresh and well. The race seemed little more 1 than an exercise tantor for.the champion. He t drew the outside r.osition in a field of_ halt a a dozen, and George Young did not hurry b bim over the first couple of furlongs, prefer- . ring to get the vails "behind Rational and Wairarapa, but once in the straight he drow up on the inside, and came on to. Wirr with I the sreatest ease by two. lsngths ? tional, with Rouen aight lengths-further I away third, and the up. The tune for the five furlong*' was lmin 1 .MSmo, out. L the ground for 'the first furlong was a trifle 1 holding, and the winner was never fairly ex- ; tended. If lie retains his form till the Auck- ' land Meeting, Gloaming will be a very nara > nut to crack at Ellershe. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES.
