Complaints having been received with •■ reference to alleged undesirable conduct i o& the part of users of the Kaiapoi <■" Volunteer Fire Brigade rooms, the mat. : 'tar. was discussed at a special meeting ,' of the Kaiapoi Borough Council, held ,v in committee last week, as a result of which tha superintendent of the briji gade'<jMr J.'A. Mealings) woe asked to . resign. At last night'a meeting of the - Borough Council, a letter was received 1 from Mr'Mealings asking tho Council v , to reconsider'the resolution requesting v ' his resignation, as he thought tho Council's decision far too drastic after he lad served 19 years in the brigade, in--eluding 10 years as superintendent. A letter was also received from the-secret • tary of the brigade, appealing *to the ' Council to rescind its resolution regarding the superintendent, and' stating that at a meeting of the brigade on Monday evening, 19 members out of „ 20 had voted in favour of the-super* <- intendent being reinstated. Cr. Leithead moved) and Cr. Barnard seconded: "That the letters bo received,, and that the Council regrets that • it cannot rescind its resolution." An amendment by Cr. Hirst, seconded by Or. YeUowlees, "That the Coun- ■ cB rescind the resolution of the special - mcnt.ing, and tiat the- 1 matter be held orer for six months," was defeated after a full discussion. The Mayor (Mr J. H. Btockwell) said w matter was painful. The' details were of such a nature that they'had -.to be taken in committee. Only a - serious state'of things would'make the - Oounefl act as it had done.
