CASUALTIES
DEATH OP AN INFANT. The adjourned inquest touching the death of a newly-born ntfje chik£. which was found on November 14th x&' derneath the bed of a tingle woman at a private hotel, was continued yedjrday before the Coroner, Mr S. K. MoCarthy. -*• Mr P. f. J- Amodeo appeared on behalf of the mother. . Constable H. W. Wilkfas gave evidence that the girl admitted she was the mother of a child found under the bed. She stated that the child had not uttered a cry, and that it wu dead when born. The room was in disorder, and a short penknife was on a table. The knife appeared to have blood on it. The mother said she was a domestic servant, residing at Wellington. Mr Amodeo advised her not to answer questions which might incriminate her. She refused to answer any questions relating to the death of the child. *j The" inquest was then adjourned to Friday at 10 a.m., as the evidence of a nurse and a doctor has to be taken.
William James Paul, «2 years of age, living nt 441 Cnshel street, was ndmitted to the Hospital last evening with slight injuries to his face throughj>ojng knocked down by a motor-car in Cathedral square. It is understood that the boy, who could not swim, fell in at the dew end of the bath, and never rose to the surface The body wa* recovered m about a minute but attempt* at artificial respiration failed. DUNEDIN, November 20. Robert Baden Powell Carter, a sing)* man, nged twenty-«ix, was found dew in South Dunedin last evening. Beatn was supposed to have been due to irritant poisoning. Powell waa out of work for eight months, and was very despondent. \
