A NEW MILK DRINK.
| AUCKLAND SOUNDS ITS PRAISES. (special to "the rasss.") AUCKLAND, November 29. The drinking cf milk in whic'h. a plant known ns the "Bulgarian bug" lias been grown bids fair to become very fashionable in Auckland. Milk so treated will not, according to authorities, do anyone any harm, and in certain cases will do good. This plant and the qualities of milk in which it (has stood have been known by some medical' men lot" vears, b;it it was not u iti i recently that the plant made its appearance "here. A few years ago_, indeed, a local medical man enquired for a pieco of one, offering £5 for it. To-day it is found in a remarkably large number of homes, its distribution having been made easy by the fact that a piece ot' plant .broken off will continue to grow rapidly, provided it is washed and placed in l'rcsh milk each day. The tact that milk thus treated is very similar to ordinary butter-milk in properties and taste, may have some bearing upon its wide use, seeing that butter-milk, particularly that obtained direct front the churn immediately the butter 4ias solidified, has long been regarded not only as an excellent drink, but also as one containing tcnic properties. From enquiry made in authoritative quarters, it appears that this treated milk is valuable, as an intestinal antiseptic. It acts n.s an uric acid climirutnt, and therefore is used by people suffering from rheumatism and sriatica. It has been proved to be a. good body builder. It is also prescribed for indigestion. The plant resembles to sonio extent a piece of cauliflower, though it is not so stiff. It is placed' in a glass of fresh milk and left there for 24 hours, when tko milk should be drained, off and drunk.
