LAWN TENNIS.

NOTES. In spite of the changeable weather experienced lately, there is plenty of evidence of the fact that thie summer tennis will be more popular than ever before. If each club had twice as many courts as it now possesses, there would not be too many. In some oases the position is serious. It is understood that St. Albans have refused 44 applications for admission, as members. Some clubs have been obliged to limit their new members to old players—beginners are not accepted as members. No doubt thie is unavoidable in the circumstances, but the position is a decidedly undesirable one. The need for association courts is becoming more and more evident. The matter is, of course, almost entirely one of finance. The Canterbury College Club is devoting! much attention to its probable Easter Tournament team at present. The tournament is at Auckland, and naturally the competition for places is .keen. The tentative team is: Misses H. Valentine, B. Smith, E. Partridge, lind M. Sowden; R. Worker, A. D. Tench, A. J. Harrop, and I. Seay. The doubles combination® have not been finally decided yet. The team i« gaining considerable benefit from the coaching of Mr G. Ollivier, who has kindly given his once or twice a week in order to improve the style of the players. If a regular system could be devised, whereby the members of each club could got occasional coachingl from our 'best players, the standard of tennis in Canterbury would be vaetly improved. THE WILDING CUP. The match between Auckland and Canterbury for the Wilding Cup promises to form a very interesting conclusion to the Temu* Carnival at Christmas. The Canterbury team ia not definitely selected, but will probably be:—Ollivier. Greenwood, Wilding) and Aitken. The Auckland team will probably include Bartleet, Griffiths, and Robion. Dr. Laurenson is now in the Waikato Association's district. His inclusion would have strengthened the Auckland Bide considerably.
