November 21st, 1921. 25«G TRAMWAY FACTS. mo THE ELECTORS,-The Hon. John i. Barr, in his comparisons between the length of the North Beach and Sumner line\ gives the respective lengths as, North Beach 533 chains, concession ticket 6s M, Sumner 6-11 chains, concession ticket Sain the one case the measurement is to a stopping place 66 chains short of the terminus and in the Sumner case the measurement is right out to the terminus. . In neither case do the bulk of the -residents travel to the terminus. Mr Barr also wants 18 chains off the length of the North Beach line to allow for the fact that the tram runs round Cashel street way. Way not allow the same chainage to the Sumner residents who get off at Cashel etreet. If we make comparison with other lines; the second section in the Fendalton line is a quarter of a mile longer than the Woolston section—why? Woolston-Sumner residents are asked by Mr Barr to "note the small margin of profit," £BBS for last year, but it is not stated that this "margin" or surplus is over and above £34,000 transferred irom profits to the various "Reserve Funds"— after interest, working expenses, repairs, and maintenance had been paid for. The facts are that no other tramway management in New Zealand is attempting to pile up the huge reserves that Christchurch is, and no other tramway concern wants them less, because the wear and tear to lines and rolling- stock A less in flat country than in hilly country. This is proved by the figures for 1921 for Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland. Chch.| Well. Auck. Cost per car mile. """Pence. Pence. Pence. Power .. 1.28 5.2* 4.13 Maintenance 3.88 6.05 5.33 Operating . .. 13.39 22.12 16.61 Note—The above figures are all for 1921. The figures for 1920 are equally convincing, and attempts to cloud the issue cannot destroy their significance. In support of its policy in piling up huge and inordinate reserves, the Tramway Board opinion of Mr William Ferguson, who is a retired Harbour Board Engineer, against the neers and experts at Auckland, Wellington, and Dunediri. 1531 (Sisned) J.
