(Mrs) McCombs and the three Woolaton representatives, Crs. McGregor'"Wright, L. Hart, and J. L. Gant. Finance. The financial statement showed:—General rate levied £101,054, collected £20,803, eutcttanding X 50.250. The district fund showed a debit of £191,259 (temporary loans £153,200, overdraft £38,058). New Legislation, The Minister of Internal Affairs advised that the resolutions ot-the recent conference in Christchurch Telatinjr to the Local Bodies Finance Bill und ih© Motor Vehicles Bill, would be submitted to the committees to which the" Bills -wei© referred. The letter was received. By-lav Exemptions. The Minister of Education acknowledged the Council's protest against Clause 11 of the Education Amendment Bill exempting Education properties from- local iodies' by-laws, and stated" that the" repf eaen'tatioris 'of the Council .would have careful consideration. The letter was received. Opawa-Woolston Subway. ■ The Acting-Minister of Railways, .writing in reply to th© Council's resolution ,urging that the Railway Department should put in hand immediately the . construction of a Sedestrian subway under the line to connect pawa and Woolston, stated there wasjiot *, publio crossing, at the spot in question, and those passing. over the railway were trespassers. PubEc level crossings existed at 16 and 17 chains distance on either side of the proposed subway. After giving tho_matter mature consideration be regretted he could not see his way to depart from the previous decision. Cr Hunter moved that further representations should be made to the Department in support of the request The motion" was seconded by Cr. c. vv. Hervey, who said "the people had to cross the line already "in order" t» get to the trains. The motion was carried.
