METROPOLITAN TROTTING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING NEW ZEALAND CUP DAT. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will open its Spring Meeting at Addiugton to-day. The fixture is quito the most important of the season, aud provided the weather holds up, the track will be fast and the racing should be interesting and well up to the high standard seen a> headquarters. The fields are large, and contain representatives from most of the principal stables in the Dominion, while :i few Australian owned and trained norsos engaged during the day should ;ifld additional interest to the fixture. The much-di»cussed New Zealand Trotting Cup. the richest trotting race in New Zealand, endowed with £3OOO and n silver cup presented by t)ho Hon. C. Louisson, has drawn a field of thirteen. With John Dillon an unlikely starter, twelve well-performed, high-class horses promise to face the starter, and with :i short limit of Csec, the fight for supremacy tihonld bo one of the keenest seen on the Metropolitan course. For several weeks past Man o' War has been iVvourite, and is likely to start so toVlay. Unfortunately for his large army of admirers, he has not been pleasing his trainer in his work during the past neck, and unless the son of Peri Huon and Wilga is in a generous mood and strikes his best form, his prospects of success cannot be viewed in a favourable light- Albert Cling, who was one of tho last to arrive at headquarters, has come through a satisfactory preparation, and will strip one of the fittest horses in tho race, and what beats the Min. of Young McKinney and Embrace will win. The New Brighton candidates, Willie Lincoln, Iteta Peter, Gleaming, Vice-Admiral, and Anturio, have each come through a solid preparation, and F. Holmes's pair, Trix Pointer and Sherwood, are on the top of their form. Rangitata Lass, General Link, and Agathos will not be lacking inj condition, but on form cannot have, much prospect of success in a race of this description. Tho Middleton Handicap has drawn a select field of seventeen unhoppled trotters, and with Whispering Willie, Gold Boy, and Effie. Bingen engaged, the public should witueßs a fine exhibition of free-legged trotting. Since the August Meeting the club lias erected a new scratching board and stand for the publication of the riders' names. It will be. used for ihe first time to-day, and it is. certain to be much appreciated by the general public. The first race will start at i 1.35 a.m., and a special tram service will run to and from Cathedral square during the day.
