THE RUSSIAN FAMINE.
■ - ♦ AN APPEAL POR HELP. . v *l In connexion with the distress fron famine in Russia, the Prime Miniate* has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner: — "The Russian Famine Save the Obildren Fund has undertaken to feed 250,000 Russian children during the winter instead of 100,000 mentioned m my telegram of September 2nd, to prevent appalling loss of young lives this winter. Money ia urgently required. New Zealand's generosity saved many lives when the need was great, and il is now much more urgent. Will you let the public know this and ask for helpP" ' ~ ~ Subscription lists for this object a» at present open at the Municipal Offices in the principal cities. It hae also been arranged that subscriptions may M forwarded to the TJnder-Secrotar- f«* Internal Affairs, by whom they will b» transmitted to the High Commissioner. A deputation from the Chemists' Defence Association last week waited on the Minister of Labour at Wellington to make representations to him on the subject of Sunday closing. It way stated by one of the speaker* that last year a majority of the fact, all but five—had signed a reamation in favour of closing on Sundays. bub had found that there was no legal provision for the enforcement of the requisition. The chemists desired an amendment of tJhe law so that the* should be enabled to close on requiaw tion. The Minister, in his reply, said; that he was opposed to any alteration that would prevent the public from having urgent prescriptions made up on Sundays. He gathered from the remarks of the spokesmen that they wished the control of hours on Sunday tq apply only in places where there wore night pharmacies, and then only to chemists wit Sin a radius of three mites of sudh pharmacies. He would be pleased to consider their request in connexion with the amendments to the Shops and Offices Act, now being pi* pared.
