At tike clos* ing session this morning Professofl Shelley will deliver an address on "Ait and Handicraft." When the question arose in the Supreme Court yesterday as to the date upon which certain prisoners sh/ould come up for sentence, his Honour Mr Justice Adams remarked: "Next week, I understand the activities of Christchurch will be given up to the main business of the year—'(laughter)— and there will be some difficulty in carrying on the business of the Court." His Honour fixed 10 o'clock on Monday morning for imposing sentences. During the hearing of the alleged bookmakmg case at the Supreme Court yesterday, his Honour showed some anxiety as to whether the jury understood what a "double chart" was: but counsel assured his Honour tuat these documents were not so rare and that it might be assumed with safety that members of the jury knew what they were. Mr F. D. Sargent, one of the counsel appearing for accused, remarked • that a (few day* ago he saw a "double chart" lying on the footpath in front of the Police Station, but did not pick it up because of the liability to be accused of following the business of a bookmaker. Later the Crown Prosecutor (Mr A. T. Donnelly) remarked that owing to the unjustifiable timidity of counsel for the defence they did not have a printed chart to produce as an exhibit. A handsome gift has been made to Canterbury College by Mr H. A. Cowper, who has had the special editions of ihe illustrated London "Graphic," depicting scenes at the Coronations of King Edward VII. and King George V. beautifully bound and deposited in . the College Library. The work of binding the papers into volumes, which was done by the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd., was artistically carried out, the binding being of, Morocco, with gilt edges and gilt lettering. A suitable inscription was placed inside the covers, and the edges of the leaves were bound with silk, so that they will not be torn with ordinary handling. Mr Cowper has received a letter from the Registrar of the College, accepting the | cift with thanks. j
